Pregnant after IF

Final RE appt this week - any advice?

So I have my final appointment with the RE this week. Any advice on what I should ask? For those that have been moved on from RE to OB, did your RE keep in touch? I just don't really know what to expect and I've been really happy with the RE and nurses this whole time.

Re: Final RE appt this week - any advice?

  • At the final appointment (from my experiences) they normally tell you to see your OB within two weeks, so you may want to book that appointment now. Other than that, they  will tell you when to quite meds if you are still on them.

I didn't hear from my RE again until a month after DD was born. They will call and get your birth details for their SART data.

    Congrats!

  • make sure u get all your records for when you transition to your ob, especially the genetic testing if you had that done

i haven't heard from the RE office since graduating - i don't mind though as it wasn't a particularly warm office....more like a baby factory but i'm not complaining as their statistics are pretty great

  • I got all my paperwork since I had frozen embryos in their labs and discharge paperwork about meds and seeing an OB. Other then that she told me she wants an email with pictures and wished me luck! It took like 5 mins after the final ultrasound was done.
  • Not much.  They'll probably tell you to make sure you get in to see your OB or M/W with the week, but that's really it.  They'll also want to know where to send all of your records.  I had mine all sent to me because I wasn't sure if I was going to stick with my OB - this way I could make my own copies to give to whomever may have needed them without going back to the RE over and over.  They'll tell you when to stop your estrace and PIO, they'll give you one last u/s pic, and really that's it!

The hardest part is definitely getting used to not being constantly monitored.  Not gonna beat around the bush, it's nerve wracking.  I'm just about 19w and I still freak out on almost a daily basis that something is wrong.  But it does get easier.  I still worry, but not nearly as much as I did at first.

    Congrats on graduating!

  • When we graduated from our RE, they gave us a letter and medical records for the OB.  We are also supposed to follow-up with the RE at 20 weeks. This was specified in our IVF contract, so I'd review the contract for any specific actions you might need to take.

I agree with PP that it was hard to go from frequent monitoring to almost none.  I just try to focus on the positive, no issues things are progressing as expected.

    Congratulations on graduating!

  • I got all of my paperwork so I would not have to repeat testing. This included not just u/s, but also things like bloodwork that was done both before and after the BFP. My RE gave me a card to mail back that let's them know the outcome of the pregnancy. We won't have any other contact with them now, unless something goes wrong.

I know it is hard when you have a place and people you like, but saying goodbye is a really good thing!

  • Make sure you ask how long you should continue your progesterone or other meds if you on any. Usually the RE determines the length of time.
I wasn't ready at the time since I graduated at 9 weeks, but you could ask about donating any left over meds. I still have about 200 units of follistim, and now that I'm 26 weeks, I'm ready to donate them back. We were completely OOP, so I know how appreciative someone would be if they needed meds for one last stim day.
I miss my RE terribly! She was always available to answer questions and emails, even after I had graduated. I plan on going back after the baby is born (when nobody is in the waiting room of course) to thank her for the gift she gave to us.
    Good luck!

  • I'm planning on keeping in touch with my RE's office, just because I've developed a great relationship with some of the u/s and med techs. They have a "Baby Harvest" every fall...where the office sponsors a big party at a local park and invites all the patients who graduated to show off their LO's. Around Christmas, they get tons of cards from patients and they hang them in the lobby too...it's kind of nice :-)
