Someone on FB posted an article about ditching sippy cups between 12-18 months because they are "bad" for oral development. Wondering how many people are doing that? DS can drink out of a normal cup, but dumps half of it on himself (or gets too much in his mouth and spits half out).. For sake of cleanliness, we give a sippy during the day and he only has a real cup maybe once a day during a meal while I'm sitting and can "help".. (This is new for us, btw.. Just started doing this).. Ped said they like to see them off a sippy by 2. Still seems young to me!! I feel like if I took the sippy away and inky gave a real cup the amount of fluids he'd intake would decrease a lot becAuse he wouldn't have the cup next to him all the time (as it would have to stay in the kitchen).. Idk, just trying to see 6 months into the future I guess!!
Good to know.. He can use straw sippy a, but they leak like a sieve! We have new carpets in our family room and bamboo hardwood in the rest of the downstairs.. Water marks stain! So, we've stuck with the playtex ones.. The pacifier is a whole separate issue.. Ugh!! DS never used a pacifier until DS2 was born, and now it's a battle to get it away (mostly on days when his teeth are bugging him).. Go figure DS2 never really needed it, so I'm kicking myself for even letting them resurface!! I just figured by 1, he'd never go back to it?? Nope!! Sigh.
Gosh, if it's not one thing it's another. DD still takes a sippy, and I'm more concerned about her getting enough fluids than anything else. I guess I'll invest in some straw cups.
We use straw cups for my 2 1/2 year old but are starting to use regular cups for her with a very small amount of liquid when she's going to be sitting at the table like for a meal.

My dd only gets only open cups at mealtimes, and she has for at least 6 months (so, since she was 2). I only keep sippy cups for traveling and bedtime (she takes a cup of water to bed, in case she gets thirsty). I think those recs seem awfully early- I see plenty of preschoolers with sippy cups!

That was my feeling... I can totally see giving her a proper cup at 2, but right now? She'd just dump it on herself.
DS started taking open cups before he was 18 months old (thank you childcare!), I think he was 16 months old. But for crying out loud, let the kids have the darn sippy cup.
That was my feeling, too.. but I was surprised to see how many people comment on my friend's post agreeing about taking the sippy at a year! Umm, what?
