STMs (and others) Braxton Hicks?

I never had BH until the end with my son and even then, there were very few. This time, I get them almost every day and some can be pretty intense. Anyone else experiencing this?

Sorry if this has been asked, just point me in that direction, if it has.

Re: STMs (and others) Braxton Hicks?

  • I'm not sure if it's been asked, but I'm definitely getting them earlier with Charlie than I ever did with C.  They aren't super intense, but they are definitely noticeable.  I would check with your OB at your next appt, just to be on the safe side if you are worried.  It's what I'm going to do.

  • Make sure you are drinking enough water, being dehydrated can cause contractions.
  • I'm noticing them already too, much sooner than I did with DS.  I'm not sure if maybe it's just because I actually know what they are this time around?  I plan on asking my OB at my appointment on Monday.

  • Can you all explain what they feel like? I'he had some weird uncomfortableness a few times and I don't know if its BH or just dehydration.

They feel like tightness. Right now in the lower abdomen. I've had them since 16 weeks this time around. I assume you notice them sooner in subsequent pregnancies because you know how they feel, but I could be wrong. I wouldn't worry too much as long as they aren't regular.

I've been getting them this time. Ditto on the water. I think sex also brings them on, just FYI. Stay hydrated and it shouldn't be too bad! (The BH, not the sex)

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • For me they feel like everything down there gets snug, the tightness comes later in pregnancy for me.  They also tend to make me just slightly short of breath, it's weird.

BH shouldn't be painful either. Just a tightness in your abdomine. And if you're having more than 4 an hour, go to L&D (if you're over 20 weeks, if not, ER). I have full on painful contractions that wrap around & cause back labor as well which is why I'm on bed rest. But keep your water intake high, as others have said. Lay on your left side. Take a warm bath. Relax. Have your SO rub your back. Sex will definitely bring them on. Especially if you O. @flerlgirl, I notice the sex is better if well hydrate as well! ;) Btw when I typed your name, my iPhone recognized it and auto filled! Ha! My iPhone knows you. Creepy. :P
That's how my contractions have been and I get super queasy and the wind knocked out of me. I don't get them that regular (it's not a daily basis thing). I have been trying to figure out when/why I might be getting them. I think I have pinpointed them to the days that I get very little sleep, I'm talking 5 hour or less of sleep. Would sleep deprivation cause them? I've Googled and it looks like the answer is yes, but I don't 100% trust Google. This is something that I plan on asking my doctor too.

  • I've getting them already too. (Much earlier and more often than with DD) my Dr told me to stay very hydrated (since they can cause them, as others have already said) and to relax and put my feet up if I can. I get them more when I over do it.
  • I had a ton of BH in my first pregnancy, starting around 20 weeks. I had more than 4 an hour all the time--sometimes up to every 5 minutes. But I could always get them to go away if I changed what I was doing, peed or drank some water. I ended up being induced at 41 weeks so all those BH clearly didn't do anything. They can be annoying and pretty uncomfortable. But if they are painful or progressive or you can't get them to go away, call your doctor.

  • I get them daily too. I only got them in the third tri with my daughter. They can get pretty intense, but they don't have any regularity to them and I can stand them. I get them every day but usually only a few spurts during the day. Some people get them hard, some don't. My doctor knows and isn't concerned, so just keep your doctor in the loop.

  • If you have too many BH or feel uncomfortable, when in doubt go see your OB.

I was having too many BH with DS several years ago, I call my doctor and they send me to L&D at the local hospital. Turns out at 28w I was 2 cm dilated and contracting pretty regularly. I was on bedrest for 8w until I delivered him at 36w when my water broke on its own.

Granted my story is one of the odd ball ones, but better to be safe than sorry.

  • It's pretty typical to notice them more with subsequent pregnancies.  All women have them; just notice them differently.

I never felt any with my first, only a half dozen times with my second, and none so far this time.
