Raising your kids in the same town you grew up in...

I always thought it would be great because I will know their friends parents and what they were like growing up.  I just came to a realization today that when my oldest starts kindergarten, I know all of the kindergarten teachers but one on a personal level and it's kind of a double edged sword.  One I graduated high school with and we were good friends in elementary school.  We are fb friends and swap craft supplies and kid stuff every once in awhile.  One I worked with for several years at the grocery store and she is married to my cousin's cousin on the other side of the family.  I would be fine with him having either of them as a teacher.  There is another one that I also worked with at the store and one that was one class ahead of me in high school that I do not want to sit across from at a parent teacher conference.  If any of them happen to be on maternity leave at the time, the long term sub is one of my sister's closest friends from high school.  It's going to be strange.  Thank goodness we are allowed to request a teacher.

Re: Raising your kids in the same town you grew up in...

  • We come from a very small rural area. We are currently living here because this is where family is. However, when the kids are old enough for school I plan to either homeschool or move a few towns away. I did not have a good experience with our school system and the thought of sending them here makes me anxious (and I'm not an anxious person).

We would still be close to family but able to choose from more options as far as school goes.

I agree that it can be awkward at times. Especially in small areas where everyone knows everyone else.

  • Luckily our town is large enough we probably won't run into that particular issue. I never thought I'd still be living in my hometown, but here we are...

  • I actually do love living in my hometown for the most part.  It's a small town where we know just about everyone and their parents and grandparents and can feel safe.  There is even a group of young parents from my generation that started an organization that hosts a lot of family activities to get the place moving and shaking again.  We live in what was my grandparent's house right next door to my parents and I'm glad my kids get to grow up with their grandma and grandpa and aunts and uncles and cousins so close by.  He will even have 2 of his second cousins right in his graduating class with him at school.  I loved going to school here but a lot has changed since then.  It will just start getting a lot more awkward when one of them ends up in the same class as my high school boyfriend's kid, though.

  • I don't even have a home town. lol. We moved 4 times (5 but I was only a couple months old for the first one) when I was a kid/teen. My parents moved the day after I graduated high school. My dad was a carpenter when I was little and then a pastor when I was older. We went where the work was.

Sounds like me .. I moved 5 times before leaving school at 16..  I'm 44 this year and had at least 18 different places to call home.. even tho a few of them were just temporary for a few months here and there. I'd be hard pushed to pick one to call.. where I grew up... but there was one that has always been super special and I hope one day to be able to take my son there at least for a vacation.. I haven't returned in over 13 years ... It's long over due.
