ultrasound at every appt?

To my surprise my doctor does an ultrasound at every appt when having twins. Pretty neat to see the babies develop from 2 weeks ago to now....what a difference. Also the 1st tri screening came back normal. The ultrasound tech tried to tell me the sexes but the little ones wouldn't cooperate. Anyone else's dr do ultrasound at every visit? This is a first for me since ive only has singletons in the past where it was 3 ultrasounds thru pregnancy.

Re: ultrasound at every appt?

  • We get one at every appointment as well, my doctor said it's the best way to measure the babies growth. It is usually just a quick scan but still very cool :)

  • Yup, I get a quick ultrasound at every appointment. My doctors say it's too
Hard to check heartbeats with a Doppler with twins. They are usually very quick but it's nice to check in on them so frequently. Counting my MFM appointments I've had about 25 ultrasounds in 32 weeks!

  • Not for me - I had no ultrasounds at OB appts. Instead, monthly growth scans at the MFM.

  • I had to go to the MFM specialist for ultrasounds every two weeks throughout my pregnancy. Now that I'm close to the end I'm going every week! It's so fun to see the babies so often :)
  • My OB uses it just to check heart beats and positioning of heads at every appointment. I so look forward to my OB aptts!

  • Ours did, it was easier than doppler and more accurate than abdominal measurements.

  • Yup, every time. For the past few months (besides the NT) it's been just a quick look, maybe 2 mins or so each and just enough to see them squirming and see the HBs. But I guess starting after the a/s they're going to be doing longer u/s so they can get a detailed measurement.

    I like it :)

  • Yep every time :)
  • Nope. My midwives do 7weeks, 20weeks and then as needed with OB after that. I requested the NT scan so I'll also have one at 13 weeks.

They prefer to use the Doppler for heartbeat checks.

  • My OB does it for singletons as well.
  • I get one at every appointment with my OB, then a growth scan with a MFM every month.
  • Yep, my OB does it to check heart rates, but I spend most of my time at my MFM's office. They check for TTTS every two weeks (mo/di) and a growth scan every four. I will go even more frequently once I hit 26 weeks (only 3 weeks away!). My insurance does not cover ultrasounds, so that has been fun! But since we hit our deductible, we now only pay 10% instead of 100%!
  • Every visit. For OB appointments its just to check heart beats and MFM is a full scan with measurements. Love it :)

  • No, I only had 3 ultrasounds with my OB...one at 10 weeks, 20 weeks and 35 weeks.  I had 2 with my RE before that.  We used a doppler to hear heartbeats every other appointment.

I don't have a MFM, just my OB, and I get growth scans at every appt, they take about half an hour.

ETA: mine are di/di but my OB considers all multiples to be high risk. Plus I have a history of complications so the scans are just to make sure all is going well.

  • I've been to eleventy billion docs in this pregnancy for various reasons. MFM1 did u/s every other week, OB did u/s every appt (monthly), MFM2 did them every other week, OB2 did doppler, MFM3 does them monthly, and OB3 does doppler.
