Wait to induce until 39 weeks?

My wife is 33 weeks with twins. We just go home from seeing our OB, and when I asked about when she would want to induce she said 39 weeks. Our twin class told us anything past 38 is dangerous to the babies. This might not even be an issue for us, but has anybody else heard of waiting this long?

Re: Wait to induce until 39 weeks?

  • My OB said he would ideally like to wait until 39 weeks as long as everything was going well. My twins are di/di and I didn't have any major complications with my singleton, so I think those are factors.

  • My doctor also told me not past 39 weeks, as long as things continue to go well.
  • My ob wants to do a CS at 37 :(
  • I went 39 wks 4 days. My doctor brought me in then and broke my water bc I was very dilated and he was going to be at the hospital that day. The end was so hard but worth it. My babies are so healthy
  • My OB said 39 weeks as well.  I developed pre-e so I was induced at 38 weeks.

  • My ob would induce me at 38 weeks. I went into labor at 33w2d.

  • My MFM said they wouldn't let me go past 37 weeks, but my twins are mo/di so share a placenta. As far as I know, di/di can go a little longer since they each have their own placenta.
  • Assuming no complications, I would have been able to go up to 39w. I developed mild pre-e at 32w which pushed my end date to 37w. My water broke spontaneously at 34w, unrelated to the pre-e.

    My boys were di/di.

  • The reason things are changing to 39 weeks is that there is a very recent study finding its healthier to go to 39 weeks for brain function. That said, my dr kept saying he would schedule a c section at 39 weeks, but wanted me to make the call at 37. I went to 37w2d as I went into pre-labor on my own and had a planned (unscheduled) c section.

  • My OB told us 37 weeks and 38 weeks at the max for their practice. He also let us know that twins usually decide to come on their own before then.

  • It all depends on the hospital's policy. My obgyn wouldn't induce at 37 weeks. She said it's against their policy and that they induce anywhere in 38 weeks but wouldn't go beyond 38w6d, and that majority twins are born before 38w. Very few ladies succeed in carrying their twin pregnancy 39w or 40w, and that also brings along a lot of risks for the babies.
  • Di/di and we went to 39 weeks with zero problems.  They were totally healthy, pretty big, able to BF from the beginning.  I think that if they want to stay in that long (which they probably won't) let em!
  • I was not going to be induced at all, except I needed emergency surgery for my gallbladder at 38w2d.

The babies were no where near coming said the OB, and they were born over 7lbs each.

I'm guessing they are monitoring you, so if any complications they will take them in an instant.

  • My OB says 38 at the latest. They also start weekly NSTs around 32 to make sure the babies are ok. I'm sure if your OB wants to wait till 39 he/she will still be monitoring the babies and induce earlier if needed.
