10 month old nap schedule

My DD just turned 10 months this week and I feel like we need to tweak our schedule. She has been taking 20+ mins to fall asleep and only napping for 30-40 minutes for the last 2 weeks. She used to have short naps until about 7 months when we started a bit of nap training and she then got into a good groove of longer naps. She was doing 2 hrs of awake time before #1 and then 3 hrs before nap #2 then 3.5-4hrs before bedtime (always around 7ish). I've extended her morning wake time to 2.75hrs with some success on a couple of days. What does everyone else do? I leave her about 15 mins when she wakes but she isn't going back to sleep (usually wakes crying but calms relatively quickly). I can tell she's still tired. No new milestones and no new teeth coming either. Thanks!

Re: 10 month old nap schedule

  • When my LO was younger she would only nap for 30-45 min twice during the day. She goes to daycare so trying to "train" her nap habits wasn't an option. Really we didn't do anything she just grew out of it. Now at daycare she takes one 2hr nap around noon, and when she's at home she'll take 2 1.5 to 2 hour naps, one around 10/11 and the other around 3. Then asleep for the night at 7. Every now and then she may skip the afternoon nap, if so she will wake up later the next day.

The only thing I can think of that might help you is to wear her out. Since you mentioned it takes her 20+ min to go to sleep. We play and keep her up until she is ready to pass out :) another trick I'll do is her nap times usually fall around feeding times, so I'll take her to her room, draw the curtains, turn on the sleep sheep, plug in the nightlight and feed her (just milk). She will either fall asleep while nursing or be so tired afterwards that she's knocked out as soon as I put her down. Hope any of that helps!

  • I try to follow this chart for wake times that I found on the Babycenter Sleep group. It works well for us.

  • My DD is on a fairly regular 2 Hrs up 2 Hrs Down for naps. She will talk for about 10 minutes in the crib before she falls asleep and if she wakes before the 2 hrs are up then we leave her to again talk and "play" in the crib. We always make sure that her little tummy is full before each nap. She will take on average 3 naps a day but on Sundays its usually only 2 naps because of our schedule. She does extremely well with modifications. The thing with putting your child on a schedule is you want to give her room to get used to and adjust so you know its going to work. Before her schedule existed she was always angry and irritable right before she would go down. Now she will snuggle with her blanket or play with her hair so we know it is getting close and we should get a bottle around.

  • Our schedule is
    7-Wake up
9/9:30-nap #1 (this nap is USUALLY 30-45 min)
1:30/2-nap #2- (this nap is anywhere from 2-3 hours).
    7/730-bed time
    no nighttime wake ups

if she's still awake after 5-10 minutes after i put her down, i get her back up because i don't think she's ready. I think she's fairly close to dropping the first one-ther's been a couple times she hash' really taken it, then she slept from 1-4:30.

  • my son (10 months day) went through a phase of fighting one or both naps a few weeks ago, and i think it was developmental along with being sick. if he's not sick i let him fuss and he usually falls asleep quickly. if he cries i go in and hold him, occasionally give him a bottle if he seems hungry, and usually after some snuggles he goes out like a light. he's up anywhere between 6 and 7:30 am and i put him down after being up around 2 hours. he naps anywhere from 1-2 hours, then we go for another nap around 3 hours, although i sometimes will push him later or put him down a bit earlier trying to time him with my 2 yo. then he goes to bed between 6 and 7.
