Spoiled milk...

I am on a business trip, out of my time zone and can't call my doctor yet, otherwise I would call instead of posting here...and Google is not turning up much. I ordered room service with a glass of milk and took several gulps before realizing the milk was definitely spoiled. I am really worried and near tears (hormones and jet lag don't help!). I'm going to call my doctor when the office opens, but in the meantime...please let me know if I should be worried...I'm probably overreacting and, if so, would be grateful to hear it!
ETA: Would not be worried if I wasn't pregnant, it's the baby I'm worried about!

  • If it didn't smell weird or look weird before you drank it, I'm sure it's fine. And if you're still feeling fine right now, then there's most likely nothing to worry about. If it was truly bad, you'd have thrown it up or felt something "off" by now.

Call if it'll give you peace of mind but I wouldn't stress over a few gulps.

  • It doesn't smell good, but I didn't smell it before I drank it. And it was about 25 minutes ago...I guess I'll find out as the day goes on. Just worried because I know some things can affect the baby without mom feeling any symptoms.

  • Cottage cheese, and butter milk are essentially spoiled milk. Not sure, but are they on the do not eat list? I'm sure you and LO will be just fine.

  • I really do not think a few drinks of spoiled pasteurized milk are going to harm you or LO. Now, if you drank an entire gallon, I would be worried. If you call your Dr all they will tell you is to look for signs of food poisoning: vomiting or diarrhea. When I was pg with DD, I was running late for work one morning. I grabbed a package of powdered donuts and ate them on the way to work. It was dark, so I couldn't see, but I thought "man, my taste buds must be off bc these taste a bit sour." After eating two (YES, I was stupid and kept eating them) I turned on the dome light and saw the entire bottom of the donuts were GREEN....moldy!!!! I about threw up from disgust.

  • I think if it was REALLY REALLY bad, you'd probably throw it up before it got anywhere near the baby. Dairy products are awesome that way. :) Also, it's probably not as spoiled as you think. I know I'm SUPER sensitive to spoiled milk smell right now, and I think I'm throwing things out a day or two before I really need to.
  • I am curious as to what the doctor said?  I doubt it would be anything and a lot of bacterias don't even pass the placenta.

  • Chances are 99.9999% that you are a-ok but may be in for some tummy upset. The main risk is food poisoning which affects only you (but still sucks!) typically food poisoning takes 2-6 hours to show up.  Hope all is well and you didn't get enough in you to be a problem or it was just stored by something smelly and took on the stink.
  • Spoiled milk is gross but not dangerous (unless it was raw, unpasteurized milk, which I'm 100% sure yours wasn't). I'm not an expiration date person and will actually continue to use milk if it's just on the edge of turning. NBD.

  • Thanks, guys. Haven't had a private moment to call my doctor yet (posting from my phone). Your responses have made me feel a lot better and I'm not worried anymore. Several hours have passed and I feel fine, I think I was just feeling vulnerable and frustrated and got a little too panicky. :)

  • If you drank several sips before even realizing it was spoiled, my guess is it couldn't have been THAT spoiled. And like others have said, I'm sure it's not a big deal to the baby. I would think worst case it upsets your stomach somewhat.

  • As someone who has had food poisoning while pregnant, it can be a very unpleasant experience for you, but the only risk to your baby is if you become dehydrated while ill.

And you will KNOW if you have food poisoning...  It can take up to 24 hours to show up with food; fecal contamination is the one where you know with much more immediacy.

  • Hope everything is ok! Any updates?
  • So far so good! Writing from my hotel bed now and feeling fine...even feeling baby move around. I never got a chance to call my doctor as it was a nonstop 14 hour day, but the long day was probably a good thing because it helped distract me. Thanks again, everyone, for helping put my mind at ease. Nmooney1, your story especially made me feel better!

I agree with PPs - probably no big deal.  I have a recipe for buttermilk waffle mix that calls for either buttermilk or "sour milk," so I wouldn't be too worried (easier said than done, I know!).
