Olympics

Anyone going to watch the winter Olympics?

Do you watch the summer ones?

Anyone concerned over their safety?

Re: Olympics

  • I don't ever watch the summer ones.  There aren't really any events that interest me.  For the winter ones, I like watching bobsledding or luging if I catch it but I won't seek it out.

Why is their safety something to be concerned about?  Did I miss something?

    Apparently! haha
There have been several threats to attack the games.. They're currently on the hunt for terrorists that slipped into the city (women, no less.. black widows) and because of this, they're struggling to sell tickets for the events. I think I read 70% are still available.  And some of the parents of the athletes are choosing not to attend. Scary stuff.

And I do watch! I don't dig sports but LOVE both summer and winter Olympics. They're energizing to me, and I think it's kinda fun to watch all of these people living their dreams.. and countries coming together, all the support. I love the figure skating and skiing :)   My brother went to college with all the guys on the skeleton team, so I wanna watch that too.

I just hope they'll all be safe and nothing actually goes down :(

Like a dummy, I read this as being concerned for MY safety and I was like "Um, no, my couch is really secure."
You sure? I mean did you check for loose springs?

All of you non news watching peoples are making me a little nervous here.

I get all breaking stories on my phone via CNN and a local news app.  I watch Good Morning America and the Today Show on a daily basis. And my local news. News is so important to me.

You all know Justin Bieber was arrested, right? :P

This I do know because I get all my news from a local radio station and it seems to be all they talk about.  Lol.

See, that's so annoying to me.  Same here.  My local radio is talking all about him, and NOTHING about the Olympics and terrorist threats. Boo!

  • So I just went to cnn.com and the Bieber story is plastered all over the home page.  If I scroll down towards the bottom under the travel section there is an article for "How safe is Sochi?"  Maybe they are trying to keep these attacks hush-hush?
Nah it was just "bigger" news maybe 3-4 days ago.  It was all over the front of CNN until Bieber got arrested. Then he replaced it.  But a few days ago it was the big center/top story on their front page :)   I think it slipped down because there's nothing new on it, really. They can't apparently find the chic who slipped into the city. Hopefully they do, imagine what would happen if there was an attack there.. yikesssssssssss.

  • I will watch the Olympics, at least some of the time.  I've always liked watching them though.  Different sports than what are usually televised on the main sports channels and the best of the best competing.  I like sports though.  And the summer Olympics were a saving grace during my mat leave.  There is a lot of boring tv on during the daytime IMO, once the morning news shows(Today show included) and the Price is Right are over.  I'm a Plinko junkie.    :\">

Me either. I feel bad when I step on a bug.
I will never grasp how a person can change into such an innocent little beautiful newborn/toddler/child... to someone who can kill thousands of people with no regret.  WTF goes SO wrong?

  • I think I heard them say something about going for a "patchwork" look.  I still think there would've been a way to achieve this without going into ugly sweater territory.
They completely and absolutely failed a patchwork look.

And I'm sad the Olympics have become scary territory right now.  I was just watching the news and apparently another video leaked with a threat to the games.  These athletes are living a dream, a dream some/most have probably strived for and wanted since childhood.  And now fear is in some of them.. that should be the least of their concerns.  I think it was a super shitty decision to host Olympics in a place with war and a place that is so against the gay community. Super bad idea.  I know this can happen anywhere, and has.. (i.e. Boston Marathon) but I just think it's unwise to host in area that already has obvious issues. I seriously hope everyone will be safe.

How do they typically pick cities to host the games?  I mean, I can see why they would give places a chance and all that.  I think what still has me scratching my head more is why they picked a place that's more of a warm weather destination for the winter games?  That would almost be like Miami hosting the winter olympics.  Don't get me wrong, I'm still super concerned about the security and all of the terroristic threats that are happening, but am wondering if terroristic activity and threat levels were this high when they picked Sochi.
An interesting article if interested, from 2010 :)

And how they choose- I picked this one because it's written for kids, haha.. so easy to understand.

  • We love to watch the Olympics and I can't wait for DS to see some of the games as well!  I am sad that it's starting to sound like many people are thinking of pulling out, including the US Hockey team.  These athletes have worked so hard to train for this and it would be sad if they were unable to go or even worse to get injured while there due to terrorists.
  • I don't ever watch the winter games. I watch water polo during the summer games, a little swimming, and that's mostly it.

Late to this party. Love the Olympics and I watch both summer and winter. Yes I am very concerned for everyone's safety. Even before the terrorist threats. The whole anti-gay law in Russia is just asking for violence.
Now for fashion: WTH we look like the winners of an ugly Christmas sweater contest. And I can't get into white pants.
But on a whole yes! I can't wait! I love to watch me some curling!
