Baby Names

Navia, Avery, Ivy

Hi, I am expecting a baby girl on March 5 and I read these boards often although I have been shy about posting so far. (I do participate in all the polls!) I'm hoping for some opinions--

What do you think about the name Navia (NAH-vee-ah, like Nadia with a V), nickname Navy?

What do you like best between Navia, Ivy, and Avery?

Other suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Navia, Avery, Ivy

  • Navia- have only heard this name on a character in the Spartacus series on Starz but actually kind of like it
    Ivy- favorite of the bunch
    Avery- boys name

  • Ivy!

Agree with Joy about Navia. Avery is nms and I'd like it better on a boy, but it's probably better than Navia.

  • Navia does not sound like a name to me. I know most people don't like it but I like Avery. And Ivy is really pretty!!

    Ivy by a landslide.

Navia is too close to Nivea, seems made up, and the nickname Navy is making me cringe.

Avery is a boy's name to me.

    This.  LOVE LOVE LOVE Ivy!

Ivy is NMS, but I'm with Joy and Friday, its the best of the bunch!

  • Ivy is in my final two! I can't decide either!

  • Navia is lovely, but I don't like Navy. This name is pretty, short, and simple, imo no nickname required. I will admit that the name Navi (like from Zelda) is a GP name for me so I imagine that is why I like this name.

    Ivy is nice.

    Avery is a boys name.

  • Love Ivy.

Avery is masculine. I don't like Navia.

You seem to like the V sound.  What about Olive or Vera as suggestions?

  • I actually really like the sound of Navia (never heard it before). I also love Nova, which might be your style (you seem to like the "V" sound).
  • Very helpful answers, thank you so much!  Navia is officially off the list :).  I know that most people on the bump aren't fans of boy names for girls, but I have to admit that I like them anyway, so Avery will stay for now (plus DH and both of our families love it). My reservation with Ivy is that it's a bit short and nicknamey and I wonder if it's a name that would work well for an adult? Reservation with Avery is that it's more popular than I would like and somewhat trendy, which I would like to avoid.  I'm still very open to new ideas if anyone has any!

  • I like Avery the best! It's our top girls name as well :)
Can I ask what other names are on your list (or what you've considered and crossed off)?  I noticed that you have a Delaney, so I think we might have the same taste because I like that name a lot!

Same question for you!  Can I ask what your other option is and what other names you have considered?
  • I love Ivy!

Navia reminds me too much of Neveah--barf. But I do love Nadia.

    Avery is a boy's name.

My whole girl list is long! My top names are Avery, Olivia, Elizabeth, Taylor, Sydney, Riley, Emerson, Harper, Zoe. I do tend to like "unisex" names

  • Sorry I don't care for Navia at all... I think of Navel or belly button :-S      Avery is very masculine to me even though I know soooo many little girls with this name.

    Other names with "V"

    Vivian

    Violet

    Vera

    Evangeline

    Eva

    Livia

    Neve

    Maeve

  • I like Ivy best from your list.

  • Well, I'll be the odd one out and admit that I actually love Navy.. though not crazy about Navia. I know a little girl named Navy (the only time I've ever heard it) and she is a complete doll! I also tend to like short names though. Ivy is adorable too. I'll add Veda to the mix as well. Good luck :)
  • Naviah seems confusing to me.  I think it's likely to be mispronounced, and people may think you were on the whole"heaven spelled backwards = Neveah" thing -- yikes!

Avery in my mind is a boy name.  Presumably, you're looking for a girl name.  I know one girl Avery who is in 5th grade, but my sense is that it's primarily a boy name.  I work with a male co-worker named Avery.

Ivy is underused these days and seems very fresh and pretty to me.  This would be my pick.

I understand what you're trying to say about Ivy.  And yet, I don't get a little girl vibe from it at all.  I picture a confident mid twenty year old when I think of Ivy.  I think it's a strong name and not at all cutesy like, say, Katie.  I'd class Ivy with Mary in terms of similar sound and strength.
I agree.  I don't think "cutesy" for Ivy at all.

  • I know someone named Navia and people do not have any trouble at all with it as far as I can tell. I like Ivy.

  • I know Navy is a weird name and not most peoples' style, nevertheless I do love unusual/weird names and wish I could pick it! But...I know it's not fair to inflict my weird taste on my poor daughter :). I thought Navia might be a more normal first name and then Navy could be the nickname if she liked it, but I have definitely been talked out of the whole idea (the Nevaeah comment cemented it for me--yuck!) DH will be happy to hear that I'm done with the Navy idea, he was never a fan! Ivy has been on my list since day one and I'm happy to see so many positive comments about it. I've gotten some other good ideas to consider from you guys, too, so thank you for that!
  • I like Avery:) It's also on my top girl list. But Navia is pretty. I've never heard it before, but I think it's cute!! Ivy is my sister's name.
