Adding oatmeal to formula

My son has GERD and currently takes omeprazole and Zantac. We tried adding rice to his milk but it just made him more miserable. I've been told oatmeal is supposed to be more gentle on their tummies. Has anyone else tried oatmeal? If so, did it help? Thanks!

You should consult your pediatrician first. Mine said some kids take to oatmeal while others take to rice cereal. We started with very small portions of rice cereal and worked up from there. Also have you considered the AR formula?  The rice starch is less "bulky" than the rice cereal. We can't do it due to formula sensitivity.

ETA: If you are doing breastmilk nevermind about the formula. You may want to talk to the pedi about your diet though. www.refluxrebels.com helped me a lot.

  • I will call my pedi! Thanks ladies! He actually has a milk protein and corn allergy so he is on similac alimentum ready to feed! His tummy hurt him even with just 1 tsp of rice cereal added to 5 oz of formula! :( So I quit adding it after 2 or 3 days!

We use nutramigen and have to add rice cereal because it's so thin it doesn't stay down. Another suggestion is that sometimes their tummies hurt because of a change in diet; that usually resolves itself within 5 days. Our LO got constipated every once in a while(not often) so we would help her out and then things would be fine. Btw when she does get backed up her reflux gets worse because it's like the food has no place to go but up.

  • We do the oatmeal and it has been working really well. Also it made the transition to solids sooo easy.
