Davi nickname for David?

I want to give our LO a proper name and we've agreed on David.  It's classic and bilingual (Spanish/English) goes well with our long last name.  I want to call him Davi (DAH'vee) but David usually doesn't have/need a nickname.  Would I get crazy glares when nicknaming a David?

Re: Davi nickname for David?

  • I know a couple boys/men who go by Davey, but pronounced Dave-y. I don't think anyone would side-eye you...

  • My cousin's son is David and they call him Davy, pronounced "Day-vee."  That was a fairly common nn for David in mid-20th Century.

Would you pronounce David in the English or Spanish way?  If you pronounce the whole name as a Spanish name, then the pronunciation of the nn Dah-vee makes more sense.

  • I have a student named Davi (pronounced like you said, Dahv-ee). He is from Brazil.

If you have a cultural reason for NNing him Davi, I'd say go for it. I love the name David (it will be next LO's, if a boy, MN and is my brother's name). My brother goes by Dave, which, of course, is the traditional NN for David. When really little, I knew a David who went by Davie (Dave-ee), but he outgrew that NN and is just Dave now. But, again, if you have a reason for going with Davi, I don't think it is that far of a stretch.

In an effort to make the kids bilingual we mostly speak Spanish at home so I'm thinking we'd pronounce David in Spanish.  Yeah, that's what we do with DS1 now.  So Davi wouldn't be that far fetched.

  • If you are already using the Spanish pronunciation of "DAH-veed", I don't think "Dah-vee" is going to be much of a nickname.

But really...it's a NN. You can kind of make it up as you go along.
