kids & the internet

I know last week we mentioned whether or not you and your SO had each other's passwords to social media and other things.  Just wondering how much you plan to regulate your child's internet use and know their passwords?  Or if you have an older child, what do you already do?

  • That sounds like what we would do @gotgingy

We plan to monitor when time comes.

  • We do the parental controls on my 8 year olds kindle she cannot access the internet or any apps that we have not approved. She can only use the computer if we are watching her. Eventually we will probably big brother it up and do the key strokes keyboard and the virtual desktop.

  • Right now, I plan to have access to all passwords and social media.  I'm not sure if this is even realistic, but we don't plan to allow them to use laptops in their rooms.  All computer stuff will be done where we all are.  When I was younger, we had a desktop in the main room and that was the only computer to use.  I know things have changed a lot and will so even more by the time my kids are teens.

I'm sure there will be new things in place to help monitor this stuff.  Bottom line, I plan on being all up in their business (to the extent I can) when it comes to the internet whether they like it or not.

  • This was brought to you by the crazy things that students were tweeting AT the school's Twitter page today. Middle school students were tweeting swears at the superintendent.

I agree I have no idea what will be out there when DD gets older - there will probably be more monitoring software and hopefully I can keep up with the times. I also wonder how much my kid would be able to hide from me if they wanted to (knowing I certainly hid things from my parents.) I really hope to instill the idea of being smart about what you put on the internet, but it makes me nervous what kids think is ok to put out there.

  • My DD is almost 10, and she got an iPad for Christmas. DH is an IT guy, so he set it up to where we get a copy of all her text messages sent to both of our email accounts. He also set up a monitoring system that lets us know when she visits sights that she is not supposed to, or if she tries to purchase something.

  • My two older boys both have ipods.  While I do monitor it regularly, I don't worry about them too much.  They have very few things they do, and I approve of them.  My oldest has a netbook, but again.  His use is limited to a few games he likes to play, and watching youtube videos of other people playing the game they like to play.  Neither has a cell phone, but I am considering getting oldest one when he's 10 mostly because he travels a lot with other people.  Mostly his grandfather, and they will go to the woods, and camp and hunt and fish, and I would like to be able to contact him when I need to.  They biggest issue I have had is them taking inappropriate pictures.  They aren't exactly modest, and I have deleted a few pics and videos where they were just in their underwear just in case they got seen by others.
