Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Climbing out of crib

My 15 month old wants to climb onto everything! This morning he decided that he was ready to come out of the crib so he climbed out and fell right onto the floor. We have the crib to the lowest it could go!  What do i do?

Re: Climbing out of crib

  • Are the sides and back of the crib higher than the front? The front of ours is about 2 inches lower than the sides and back. If so, you might be able to turn it 180 degrees so the lower front side is against the wall. That could buy you a few more months.

Another option is to take the bottom panel off the bed and sit the mattress on the floor within the crib frame. You can only do that safely if your mattress is thick enough to leave no gap between the top of the mattress and bottom of the frame. Also check the frame to make sure there are no exposed screws or rough spots your LO might get hurt on.

  • Oh man, 15 months is early for that! That's too bad. My daughter did that at 19 months so we moved her to a toddler bed and it was a nightmare. She was too young for the freedom, but we couldn't safely leave her in a crib. All I can recommend is to make sure his room is SUPER baby-proofed - all the obvious stuff, but also make sure any dressers, end tables, diaper change table, etc. are tethered to the wall. I also put a safety latch on the closet so she couldn't open it. Then I gated her in and to be honest, it took about 2 months before she went back to STTN.

DD's crib wasn't nearly low enough to do the mattress on the floor thing, but I don't think I would have been comfortable with that anyway...since she was still so young, I would worry about her trying to push down on the mattress or something and weasel her way out or get stuck.

    Good luck!

  • This just happened to us last night for the first time. He did it twice! DS is 20 months, so I'm guessing, per PP, that we need to be ready for tough times ahead for a while. We are just going to convert the crib to a toddler bed and just go with it. Good luck!!!

  • One other suggestion is to put him in a sleep sack. He can still stand up and walk around the crib, but it may prevent him from lifting his leg up high enough to get it over the crib rail.

  • My 14 month old loved his toddler bed..he's over two now and still, loves it. My soon to be 15 month old is getting edgy for a toddler bed. It's not all doom and gloom!
