  • Track your calories.  This was the biggest thing that helped me lose weight.  It kept me aware and accountable for what I was eating. I used My Fitness Pal to track mine.  I think someone mentioned on here (maybe @CinemaGoddess) that another site had one that they liked better.

  • We are doing the Super Shred diet. Unfortunately, you don't eat anything super exciting...lots of salads and low calorie snacks with a random two pieces of cheese pizza thrown in. I lost five pound and DH lost 14 last week, so it must be working.
  • Yeah, I like sparkpeople better than MFP.  So does @whocanitbenow (I think that's right.  FKA GhostMonkey)

I think the calorie ranges are better with sparkpeople and the website is more user friendly.  The app isn't nearly as good as the one for MFP, but unless you do all of your calorie tracking on your phone, try sparkpeople first.

But before calorie counting, maybe try logging your food (the way you eat now) for a week to see where exactly you need to improve.

  • Look into the Paleo diet. We have been doing it for about a year now, and it has really helped us health wise, and weight wise. It is expensive to eat this way, but cutting out alot of artificial stuff has helped with most of our health issues.

  • I try to eat a lot of salads, but with something good tasting and filling as well (Iike cheese and crackers).  The trick for me is to fill up on the salad first; that way I'm less hungry and not likely to eat a lot of the good stuff.

  • I do better when I don't have a ton of variety. So, most weekdays I eat the same breakfast (egg whites, spinach and feta w/ a piece of dry toast). I usually eat that on the weekends too to be honest. I try and make a weeks worth of lunches on Sundays. Favorites are turkey chili, or I just do a big pot of ground turkey breast, lots of veggies, and beans w/a can of crushed tomatoes, Italian seasonings and hot peper. Dinners are more variable, but when st home I try to stick with lean protein, small serving of carbs, and lots of veggies. I indulge on the weekends, but I try not to go nuts and eat "whatever" I want unless at a fancy place. If we are somewhere just so-so or a chain , I pick the healthy option. Lots of water.

  • Planning ahead and cooking as much as possible (as opposed to eating out.)  I have tried very restrictive diets, and while they give good results quickly, I can't maintain that.  I can't have bread and butter at dinner ever again?  No more occasional ice cream?  I don't want to live that way, for a month or longer.  I also try to limit high calorie things to when we do go out.  I want to be able to eat a burger at a good place, so I stay within my calories at home.  I try not to have wine in the house, but I let myself have a drink if we are at a restaurant.

I use MFP (you can adjust the calorie goal, no matter what it suggests).  I like it because I can put in what I think I'm going to eat in a day and then see what I have to work with.  I also like the breakdown it shows me of protein/fat/carbs.

    Good luck!

Without doing any research on this diet I can't say this sounds like a swell plan
It's actually not that bad. It's supposed to be a kickstart or to get you through a plateau. It's not a diet to follow for the long-term. It's by the guy who came up with the Shred diet.

  • I think I mentioned this somewhere else but trading my snacking in the afternoon/evenings for veggie/fruit smoothies really helped me. I still eat all real meals and focus on whole, non-processed food. I was eating crackers or other snacky stuff in the afternoons before dinner and not watching portions, so the smoothie cuts that out but I don't feel deprived.

  • I think the ideology behind paleo totally makes sense.  Because you really shouldn't eat things that don't come from an animal or the earth and I try to stick to that.   But I couldn't do paleo because coffee.  I HAVE to have coffee, esp Thursdays.

Um, you can have coffee. And alcohol.

And pretty sure all grains come from the earth, and they're not allowed on paleo. Same for beans and lentils.

Which site were you looking at, @lovelyritametermaid?

I drink coffee everyday. I use coconut milk creamer, and honey to sweeten it up a bit. Some people even use coconut butter to sweeten it.

  • I am currently on the See's candy diet. I have got to do better.
Hershey's Pot of Gold is better than See's.

I've done extensive research on this.

That doesn't make it good. Actually that should tell you that it's a bad idea. If it was a good idea, you could do it long term with no issues.

It's a fad and will bite you in the ass. But go for it. I'll be here waiting to tell you I told you so. You are losing weight because you are starving yourself. Once you start eating again your body will turn everything to fat and you will struggle to lose because of it.

In which case you try this again, sing it's praises because you dropped weight, go back off, gain again, later rinse repeat.

I think some people need to see immediate results to really commit to dieting. It's super hard when you're cutting back and see no results. It's not a starvation diet and you actually get to eat things that are not so diet conscious occasionally, such as the pizza I mentioned. I realize that when it's over, if I don't cut back, I will gain the weight back. That's common sense. However, a foundation that allows me to see a weight loss and makes me more cognizant of what I'm eating sounds great to me. We plan to start weight watchers as soon as we finish up this program.

ETA: 1200 calories a day (on most days) doesn't qualify as starving yourself to me

Nope.  Pot of Gold chocolate is creamier and has a better flavor.

  • Eating below your BMR puts your body into starvation mode, regardless of how your stomach feels. Unless you are 5'0", weight 100 lbs, are 50 years old and lay in bed all day, it's too low.

Eating good all day doesn't give you license to eat complete shit at the end of the day. You aren't learning a damn thing that is helpful long term. But whatever. Don't come crying here when this turns into the massive failure that is does for every single person that has ever tried it.

Weight Watchers is also crap and doesn't teach you shit except to avoid fats (which are good for you and you need them) and replace it with a crap load of sugars (which is what causes most weight issues in the first place).

    https://www.yourfairyangel.com/1/post/2013/07/an-open-apology-to-all-of-my-weight-loss-clients.html

That's great info about the BMR. I need around 1500 calories to lose weight.

I really don't know where you got the eating crap at night idea...I'm really not sure why you are giving me so much shit about it either. I'm certainly not the first person on the bump to go on a diet, not will I be the last. If I was doing something to seriously jeopardize my health, I would appreciate your advice...but If my physician is okay with this, I am too. I don't plan to come whining to anyone about my weight loss. I try not to whine about much on the internet, unless you count on my sons medical issues. That's a little different though.
  • Just started myfitnesspal.com.

  • @pobrecita I actually brought it up to him. He okayed it for me and my situation. I need a jump start or I'm not going to stick with a diet.
  • @lovelyritametermaid I need to lose around 50 pounds to get my BMI into an average normal weight. My goal is to lose 70 pounds. I'm 20 pounds heavier than I was when I got pregnant, which was not an ideal weight to begin with.

BMI is a joke. So is the idea of a normal weight. Not everyone is meant to be a size 2 or 6 or even a 10.

I will never in a million years be a "normal" or BMI approved weight even if I stop lifting unless I cut a leg off.

You need to focus on being healthy, not the number on the scale or the size on the tag of your pants. Your focus is in the wrong place, and that's why you are getting sucked into unhealthy fads. And you are far from the first that has run into this and won't be the last.

I give up! Think whatever you want about me. I am not at a healthy weight. I have never been one to try fad diets. I've never said this is a long term solution. It is a kick in the butt for ME. I also have used weight watchers simply for the portion control, but I needed something to help me get my willpower together. This "fad" is getting me there....to a place where I will be healthy, because that is my goal.
  • @hilarityensued I am kind of doing weight watchers in that sense too.

  • I do about a 80% paleo diet. I will have a little shredded cheese every once in awhile. And I will also have rice with my veggies now and then. I kind of have to stick to this now because I found out through paleo I have an intolerance to gluten, like cutting it out stopped my asthma completely.

Every Sunday, I cut up a head of broccoli, cauliflower, celery, and carrots. If I want to night time snack, that's what I get to eat. My body is just working better overall.although the scale isn't budging currently, I can see more muscle definition. So I'm happy.
