Any yogis out there?

My gym has an awesome yoga program and hopefully starting prenatal in a few months, but each instructor I ask I get a different answer as to whats safe. Some say no inversions (bridge, etc) and twists. It's hard to avoid twists for sure as they're in so many poses so I was just wondering what you guys were doing.

Re: Any yogis out there?

  • I am taking a beginner series right now.. Actually started right before this cycle at the RE's suggestion that it might help my stress levels and response to things :)

My instructor just told me to listen to my body and do what feels comfortable.

  • @anymax - that's great advice and I really should trust my gut. I'm just too embarrassed to tell the instructors for the third time I'm expecting!!

  • I completely understand. Perhaps ask your doctor for his opinion?
Like I said, mine referred me to yoga. His overall exercise instructions were keep it light, no personal bests. And as our bodies change, there will be positions that do just become difficult, uncomfortable, and even no longer possible.

  • I was planning to try some prenatal yoga this time around, as I figured the activity and hopefully flexibility could only help. There is a prenatal yoga series on Youtube, if you wanted to check out some of the moves. I think you can modify as needed to make things comfortable for yourself. The one I did was divided into episodes and episode 1 was really just a warm up/breathing thing and it was really nice and gentle, just kind of stretching and breathing. Felt good.

  • I have done hot yoga the past 4 years, when I got pregnant last time I switched from the 104 degree/90 min class to the 97 degree/60 class and made my own adjustments as to what felt comfortable, or since the instructor knew, she would come over and help me alter some poses/hold them easier.... The place I go to just added a prenatal class that is 93 degrees/60 minutes so I am excited to try that.

I havent been in the last week since I got my BFP, but I am hoping to get back in tomorrow and hope it helps with my anxiety/stress!

  • I agree with @AnyMax, listen to your body. If you start to feel dizzy or sick...then stop and take a break. Drink lots of water and take it slow. Twists, bends, and inversions will get harder since your center of gravity will change...if you don't feel comfortable with it, then modify it. Below are a couple of links that I pinned to my (secret) prenatal workout board and the video series is pretty nice.
I also have a yoga book that covers some poses...cat-cow is really nice for warming up and stretching out your back. :-)

  • I just signed up for yoga in hopes it would help me relax and stop worrying about ttc for a while... Had my first class Wednesday and found out on Friday I'm pregnant! The class (beginners) was really intense so I don't think I'll go back now that I'm pregnant. I had a miscarriage at 5w1d in September so I'm crazy and not taking any chances until I see my doctor 2/7. I would love to do pregnancy yoga!
  • I was doing hot yoga but dr said to stop. I bought a prenatal vinyasa DVD from amazon to do for now.

  • I haven't done prenatal yoga, but I was going to a mommy & me yoga class, she told a newly pregnant mom a while ago to just not do any inversions or anything that would stretch her stomach. I'm sure a prenatal yoga class instructor would know what to do and what not. If something feels like it might hurt or bother you I'd just avoid that move.

  • A lot of sources say twists are off limits because they can either reduce blood supply to the uterus or put pressure on the abdomen. I'm PgAL and miss my hot yoga class desperately, but there is too much there that's not right for me right now. I've been doing some of Tara Stiles podcasts that focus on upper body & one of Jillian Michaels yoga meltdown 30 minute sessions that doesn't have any questionable poses in t.
