Secondary IF

Introduction

Hello ladies!  I thought I would introduce myself.  I'm Erin, I'm 28 and my husband is 32.  We have a DS born in Dec 2011 which we conceived naturally in 7 months.  At the time I thought 7 months was the end of the world and we would never get pregnant but little did I know the road we would soon travel.  We have now been TTC #2 for 19 months.  I have been dx with a non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma, husband has had a SA that was normal, I get positive OPK’s every month so I started charting and noticed my luteal phase is only 8 days but my Dr didn’t seem concerned at the time so we kept trying.  After a CP last month my Dr has decided to prescribe vaginal progesterone.  Has anyone ever had experience with the vaginal progesterone?

I’ve been feeling pretty defeated lately with all of the pregnancy announcements from friends and family and thought it would be good for me to read others stories and get advice.  Thanks in advance for having me!

Re: Introduction

  • I am new here and new to this infertility journey as well but just wanted to say welcome!  I am right there with you with feeling defeated with all the pregnancy announcements.  It sucks but I am also glad to have found a community with people in the same situation as me.

  • Welcome! We have an amazingly supportive group of women here :) I have oodles of experience with the progesterone supps (lucky me.) - they're messy being the biggest complaint. I just use them right when I go to bed, and then grab the second an hour or two before I have to get out of bed in the morning. I don't notice any side effects from them.

Two DDs 10/08 and 08/10, no primary IF
    TTC #3 since 10/2011 - dx unexplained/weak ovulation
     3 BFN clomid + TI cycles, 5 BFN clomid/gonal f IUIs, 1 mmc IUI
2/19/2014 IVF #1 Unexpected low E2 (oversuppressed) -> increased to max doses = 3 or 4 follicles, converting to IUI
BFFP Saw 1 beautiful heartbeat at 6w6d, follow up u/s at 9w showed mmc. Eff this.
    NTNP 5/2014-9/2014, OPKs and TI 10/2014 - 1/2015.
RPL testing all normal, AFC, AMH, and FSH all normal.
    IVF 1.2 1/22/2014 natural cycle start, AFC 28, 300 gonal f/150menopur.

  • Hello and welcome! I'm new here as well. Do you have high prolactin levels due to the macro adenoma? I was dx with the same thing. My levels were high and got an MRI and found I had one. I ovulate every month and get my period, but my luteal phase was very short. I got it under control and was able to get pregnant back in June, but unfortunately miscarried. My levels are back up and I just started to take my meds again. As for the progesterone suppositories, they can be messy but not too bad in my case. Good luck to you!
  • Welcome (hugs).

  • Welcome to the board!  I'm really sorry for your loss :(

Progesterone suppositories are no big deal.  They're messy, so stock up on pantyliners, and I notice that I'm more bloated when I'm on them.  Aside from that, I don't have any issues with them...well aside from the fact that they don't do anything for my LP but details, details. :)  Hopefully they work for you.

Do you have prolactinoma? I was dx in 1997 when I was 16; my levels at the time were 1538. I conceived my son naturally (and accidentally) when my levels were about 150ish and gave birth in October 2011.

I totally get you on the pregnancy announcements-- we aren't even technically trying now and it hurts so bad. Welcome to our little community and I wish you a short stay.

  • Welcome. I have to do vaginal progesterone too. It's just messy. Stock up on the panty liners. I do one in the morning and one at night. I get really thirsty when I'm on them, so drink lots of water. Not really a big deal though. I hope you get a BFP soon.

  • Thank you all for the warm welcome.  It's all so overwhelming to me right now but I know it will be worth it in the end!

To answer a few of the questions that were asked... they tell me that it is a non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma meaning it doesn't affect my hormone levels at all.  I personally find that hard to believe with everything that is going on but I feel like the Endocrinologist should know.

I start the vaginal progesterone on CD14 so 10 more days and I'll get to experience the mess everyone speaks of.  Here's to hoping all of our stays on this board are short!
  • Welcome!  I do progesterone with an IVF cycle and they offered me injection or suppository.  I don't know if that would be an option for you in your case, but might be worth asking if you don't want to deal with the mess.  Of course the trade-off is a big needle and a sore butt.
Trying for #2 with IVF after damage done in a D&C left me with one functioning (but too scarred) ovary and tube to get pregnant safely without assistance. It's a really, really long story, but that is the gist of it.  We have one daughter (whose c-section birth started this roller coaster) born in 2012 after a miscarriage in 2011.
Failed 1st attempt at IVF (Fresh ET day 3, 1 frozen embryo saved) in December 2013.
Failed 2nd attempt at IVF (Fresh ET day 5, 2 frozen embryos saved) in February 2014.
  • My doctors don't give option, big old shot in the butt! But I found that running after preschoolers all day it works it through the muscles. After the weekend I am site because I am not running around with them so movement definitely helps! If you go that route, keep moving :)

  • Just an update on the suppositories... things are going pretty good, they are slightly messy but nothing too bad.  The only thing I don't really like is I want to eat everything in sight.  :)
  • Allow yourself a bite of everything ;) will help curb and prevent- maybe will work for you!

  • Welcome!  I take my progesterone just once a day in the morning.  Like PPs have said, they are messy and you need pantyliners.  I get a host of side effects with them: exhaustion, increased appetite, dizziness, vertigo, headaches (migraines), but I am prone to them, so the horomones just push me over the edge.  Most do not get all of these side effects so hopefully you won't.

My LP varies from 9-15 days and averages at 12.  My RE was not happy with that, hence the progesterone.  I think 8 is a bit on the short side, so I'm glad that you are starting on progesterone.  Good luck!
