27 weeks and gained 30 lbs....

I had my doctor visit today and I weighed in with a weight gain of 30 lbs. My doctor was surprised because I dont look like i have gained that much weight but then she spent 5 minutes telling me it is to much and how it is not a good thing. I feel horrible and like I somehow messed up. I know my baby is healthy it just feels horrible knowing that I still  have a lot of visits to go on and I am going to get reprimanded every time. I dont understand, I am healthy I work out 3x a week. I eat some sweets but nothing too overboard. Anybody have some advice on how to handle this?

Re: 27 weeks and gained 30 lbs....

  • Obviously everyone is different, but I gained about 27 lbs through week 30 and then the last 5 weeks, have gained nothing.  So, its possible that it will level off.  Also, I've found that it doesn't matter if I eat healthy or not.  There were some weeks when I was great and gained weight quickly and there were other weeks where I ate lots of sweets and junk and didn't gain.  I think you are fine and I would not stress about it.  Continue to eat healthy and work out.  I worked out consistently until about 32 weeks and that did nothing either to slow down weight gain.  It happens.  You are growing a person in there!

  • It depends on if you were underweight when you got pregnant. I gained 45lbs total and didn't gain any weight the 1st tri. Gained about 20lbs the 2nd tri. I gain 20lbs alone in my last month. I was also borderline underweight. My doc gave me a hard time about but I just started to ignore him bc I was so hungry all the time. I also lost 20lbs the first week pp. Just be as healthy as possible and ignore the comments from the doc.
  • your doc needs to shove it!  That pisses me off.  weight gain is different for everyone.  Not something I could control was my 76 lbs weight gain with DD.  Ya know what though - she was healthy and so was I.  I also lost it all within a year and then some.

  • I'm 34 weeks and I've gained around 60-70. I wasn't technically underweight for my height pre-preg but I was about 20 lbs under my regular weight, which was about 150/size 8-10. I was really worried about the weight gain around where you are in the pregnancy but now that I'm near the end I see that what the PPs said is totally true. You can't much control it. Although exercise will help you feel better and be more functional it's not going to have much of an effect on whatever weight your body wants to gain.
  • @jmsherman - I jsut posted on another post about this issue.  I've been struggling with this as well.  I gained 15lbs in a very short amount of time and freaked out.  I had my mom telling me things, the midwives at the new office that I had switched to telling me that it was a little much and I should lay off the carbs. Some people (husband included) keep telling me that I don't look pregnant but I can't accept it and just feel like people look at me and think I'm fat with a really large gut!  I feel like everything I put on makes me look fat, and I don't have this perfect round belly.

The only thing that I can offer, especially since I'm still dealing with it, is just like other posts said, your body gains how it's going to gain.  The only thing you can try to do is be healthy (something I wasn't doing for a period of time) and keep moving. I have heard and I believe that moving during your pregnancy is the best thing you can do for yourself... you bounce back quicker, you can have an easier labor, etc. And like someone else said, you were motivated once before, you will be again!  Have faith in yourself!  Easier said than done of course but try to believe in yourself and not stress it!
