Getting rid of pacifier...getting to sleep trouble

Our daughter (2.5) has had a binky for only naps/bedtime, and we just got rid of it yesterday. She's never had an issue before with going to bed or falling asleep, either my husband or I would take her upstairs read a book or two and walk out while she was still awake. Well last night and tonight she threw a major fit about going to sleep and screamed and cried for 15 minutes until she put herself to sleep. Has anyone gone through this with their child? Is it an age stage or does it just have to do with the detachment of the binky? Thanks for any suggestions!
