diaper disposal when you are away from home

We usually CD, but because we were traveling for an extended period of time, we bought a box of disposables.

LO happened to pee while we were at SIL's house, and I changed her, wrapped the wet diaper in a plastic bag and tied it off, and placed it into her bathroom's garbage can.  A few hours later, I received a not-too-happy text from SIL because I left a (disposable) diaper at SIL's.  Apparently, that was not a good place to leave it.

For those of you who use disposables, how do you dispose of them when you are away from home?

  • I do exactly what you did.  If it is a dirty diaper (opposed to just wet) I ask where the host would like me to put it.

  • I would have probably brought the bag with the diaper out of the bathroom and asked her what she wanted you to do with it. Some people don't empty their trash regularly if it takes a awhile to fill up. It would probably stink after a while even if it's just pee. She probably wanted it taken to the outside can or dumpster.

The times I have used disposables at people's house I either ask them what they want me to do with it, or I just take it back home with me. Out and about I just throw it in the public bathroom trash can. Even though we CD I always carry those disposable diaper bags just in case she happens to be in a disposable at the time. They hold in the mess pretty well, so you could just put it in your diaper bag and dispose of it at home.

  • I put it in the little bags used to pick up after your dog's poo and throw it in the garbage. I don't know what the problem would be if it was in a bag? I can understand if you just threw it in her can with no bag her being upset. But that isn't the case.

  • I would have done what you did.. I have those little bags to put dirty diapers in before throwing them out. If it was dirty I would have asked where she wanted it. I think she over reacted a bit.. would she have rathered you take it home to dispose of it?

  • Pee diapers = straight in the trash. Poo diapers + wipes to clean poo diapers = scented plastic baggies and then in the trash. We've only been at MIL, my mom, and DH's cousin's house and this has never been an issue at any of those places.

  • If the host is nearby, I will ask where they want it. If not though, I would do what you did and just put it in a bag in the trash (bowel movement diapers I would bring outside). It seems like a trivial thing to send a text about though, I feel like the next time you changed LO at her house she could have just politely asked you to put the diaper somewhere specific.

  • Pee diapers go in one of the Arm and Hammer scented bags then straight in the trash.  If it were a poopy diaper I would ask the host.

  • Sometimes I just take it back home with me or ask what garbage I should put it in, depends where we are. I don't think she needed to send you a nasty gram about it, just said "hey, next time...".

This. If we're at MIL's or my parents', we empty our trash ourselves, so it's not an issue.

This. ... If it's at my SIL I just put it in their trash, they have kids. Someone who doesn't have diapers at their house; I bring it back home usually.
  • Wow, I think it's weird that a diaper bothered her.  I could understand if they didn't empty the trash regularly, but obviously she saw it, so what's the big deal?

  • I would've done what you did and probably not thought twice about it. I didn't think a pee diaper in a bag in someone's trash would be considered a faux pas? :-/

  • Thanks for all your feedback.

I take everything SIL with a grain of salt because she's a special snowflake.  Other family members refer to her as "Nazi ______" and she has called me out on greeting her with "hey" because she prefers "hello" or "hi."

I was mostly just curious as to how the rest of the world deals with throwing out diapers because prior to receiving that text, I never thought about it all that much.

  • It's only happened at my Mom's and my ILs house. I just throw it in the kitchen trash can because that gets taken out the most often in both houses. I wouldn't be pissed, but I would rather have a diaper in my main trash than the bathroom trash can. I am the only one who takes the trash out of the bathroom and it doesn't fill up that fast with just H and I. I don't think your actions warranted a pissy tone though.

  • I put both pee and poop diapers in a doggy bag and then ask the owner of the house what they would like me to do with it. Most of my friends have kids and just tell me to throw away in the kitchen trash can.

  • I bring a bag and ask the host where to dispose of it unless I don't know them very well or occasion is more formal then I put it in diaper bag to dispose of at home. I've always been told to put wet diapers in indoor trash, dirty ones in outside trash.

But seriously I usually just ask, most times for pee the kitchen trash is fine, for poop it's the big trash can. And I never even wrap then in a bag if it's pee.. I think what you did was fine.
