Binkies/pacifiers at night

We are having a dreadful time with having to get up at night after DS "loses" his binky (usually a result of it falling through the crib rails, against the wall behind the crib).  We are generally fumbling around in the dark after he starts crying trying to feel around the crib to try to find it or, we are scrambling to make sure we have another one handy to pop into his mouth so he'll settle back down.  Once we give him back his pacifier he goes immediately back to sleep

2 questions....

1) Does anyone else have this problem... and if so, have you discovered any good solutions (or maybe it's just us??!!)

2)  DS is awfully reliant on his binky.  Do we need to start to try to wean him off it now (he's 17 mos).  I'm just dreading this process as it's an easy solution to get him to settle and we need to get some sleep (we both work f/t) and he's extremely attached to it.

  • Both of my boys have been like this.  DS2 is perfectly capable of finding it on his own but majority of the time, he'd rather just lay there and whine about it.  My oldest was just like this.  DS2 usually wakes 1-2 times per night for the paci (goes to bed at 7 and gets up for the day at 7) and goes right back to sleep as soon as I either hand him the paci or pop it back in his mouth.  I'm up for less than 30 seconds usually so it doesn't really bother me.

DS1 ended up giving up the paci on his own around 2.5.  He just decided he was done with it one day, bit holes in all of the pacis we had, and that was that.  His dentist wasn't concerned (and DS2's isn't concerned now) so we just went with it because he only had it to sleep.  We're taking the same approach with DS2 (also because he was a HORRIBLE sleeper up until 12 months and I'm not willing to mess with it at this point) and if he hasn't given it up by 2.5 or 3, we'll take it away somehow.
  • I hear you.  My 21 month old still likes her paci for nap and bedtime.  If you aren't going to wean him off it yet (and think he would accept a new pacifier), maybe try a wubbanub pacifier.  This is what I have always used with DD.  The stuffed animal attached to it makes it easier to find in the crib. It's been a life saver in my house.

  • DD has 3 or 4 in there with her at bedtime.  I still have a breathable bumper on her crib, just for pacifier retention.  She can find them herself if they're still in the crib.

DS was a bit more challenging.  When he was a toddler, he never wanted more than 1 in the crib, and he'd hand back any extras to us.  But he usually didn't need one after falling asleep, and we got rid if it easily at 18 months when he started to develop an attachment to a teddy bear.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I could have written this post except DD is 13 mon. I have no advice....

  • My daughter was attached to her pacifier as well. I trashed em all one day and went cold turkey. It's miserable the first few nights but they adapt.
  • 1) We put bumpers on the two sides of the crib against the wall.

    2) My pediatrician said that most dentists want the paci completely gone by age two. With that being said, DS is 20 months old and still uses his to sleep. I was going to take it away after Christmas (lots of traveling) but one week I decided I needed sleep to recover from the holidays then he got sick. Hopefully I will do it soon. I am dreading it!
  • DS is 16 months and loves his binkies. If he loses it sometimes he will cry for it for awhile. If he does that, we have several near his crib and will grab one, put it in his mouth and he will fall back to sleep. Sometimes he will find it on his own and sometimes he will not and will just fall back to sleep after crying for a few minutes. I'm hesitant to wean him since he has no lovey. Some people have several in the crib. The only problem with that is the child starts to need that many to go to bed.
  • We keep 4 in DD's bed and spread them out around the crib. We can hear her feeling around looking for them but it keeps her from fussing and waking up all the way. But, her time with a Paci is limited. We've already weaned her off them during the day and will probably take them away completely in the next few weeks. (She's 16 months).

  • DD is 15 months & completely addicted to the paci at night & naps. I also have a breathable bumper & put 3- 4 in the crib with her. My pedi told me at our 15 month checkup that her two front teeth were sticking out cause of the paci but I'm not ready to transition her only because she was over a yr before STTN.
