Damn Cradle Cap!

Anyone else STILL dealing with cradle cap?

I thought we had it under control. But it's back. Last time I used coconut oil and a soft bristle brush. So I tried that again and instead of getting better, it got worse and made her hair fall out. I've put breastmilk on her head and that didn't help. I don't kbow if I should just leave it or if I should keep using the oil and brush and just deal with it if she loses her hair.

Re: Damn Cradle Cap!

  • I just use a washcloth to lightly scrub his head with shampoo at bath time. Then brush his scalp (he doesn't have much hair!) to loosen it. At 5 months he still has some patches of it. I just don't want to deal with oils.

My first had it until 8 months...but he had TONS of hair so it was well hidden!!!

  • My pedi recommended Selsum Blue. I bought the one with moisturizing and aloe in it. He told me to put it on let it sit for 3-4 min, which I didn't do bc she was younger and I was worried about it getting in her eyes, but I lightly scrubbed it off with a washcloth. I repeated it two days later and its been gone ever since. i did use a dab one day with her usual shampoo because she had a patch where it looked like it was coming back, but its gone now also.

  • LO still has a small patch. We just use a soft bristle brush at bath time to loosen it, and it has been getting better. I don't really want to deal with oils or stronger shampoos unless it's actually bothering LO.

  • LO has a tiny bit still, she has hair so it's not too noticeable unless you are looking down at the top of her head. We are just letting it naturally come off.

  • When ours was bad we used neutrogena t-gel twice a week since he's sensitive to zinc oxide.  He still has a tiny patch, but it's barely noticeable.  It was horrible for months.
  • My son still has issues with this at 3.5. We battle it all the time, but he has also got to the age where he won't let me pick at it. At least he has plenty of hair to cover it. It just annoys me though, not him. :)

DD does not have any, but my son did not get any until after he had more hair. So it may be coming still.

I have been letting it go too but it bothers MH so I might try Selsun Blue..Its not too bad but it does make her look like she has light red hair on top when the back is brown.

  • Coconut oil made her head smell really bad and it lasted for days. I guess it didn't mesh well with her own scent?

My friend suggested we put conditioner on her scalp during a bath, let it sit, and then brush it out. That's what worked for us.

  • I've been ignoring m's. It's there, but not noticeable unless you look. Maybe I should try and deal with it.
  • Mine has it too. I have been ignoring it also. We did olive oil once and it helped. I did notice this morning that it looks like it's spreading so I will try olive oil again.

One word. Mustela. It is amazing. Took care of LOs cradle cap in 2 days. It tried coming back a week later and was gone after one use. It's a tear free shampoo designed specifically for baby's cradle cap. And it's available at target.

  • Stop using baby shampoo I swear that's what keeps bringing it back for me I did the baby oil and comb and switched to Paul Mitchel for kids hasn't been back since!
  • I second the mustela. My aunt lives in NYC and swears by it so she mailed me some when LO was born! Used it once and it's never come back! They don't sell it here unfortunately :(

  • It's back for my LO too! It was almost completely gone but for a teeny tiny bit and then it started coming back!

I'm going to have to try the Mustela that was recommended!

@babye143 same with LO and the coconut oil. Smelled like crayons to us. I just skipped the oil te second time to really rinse well.

  • Dd's came back when she starts wearing hats during the winter cold. I'm just scrubbing with a face cloth during baths and then a brush after.

  • Ours never totally went away but like many others we ignore it most of the time. We use coconut oil when we remember to use it.

  • We use regular baby shampoo but Head and Shoulders conditioner with every bath. I was worried about it getting in his eyes, but we're just extra careful and it's fine. He loves bath time, so it's not a problem getting him to hang out while we let it sit for a few minutes. Good luck! I hope some of the tips here help!
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • He started getting it once he turned 4 months old but I'm just ignoring it.  It doesn' t seem to bother him.
  • We've still got it here too. It's so gross! Not only is DD's scaly, but it's totally yellowish now. Tried oils, dandruff shampoo, and even vaseline in an act of desperation. That was just messy and did nothing.
  • What has worked for us is the aveeno baby head and body wash its tear free and has dramatically helped his cradle cap in two uses plus has helped his tiny patches of dry skin on his body, it smells so good too
  • Olive oil mixed with a little shampoo soft bristle brush go around in circles all over head. I do this every other bath

  • I just use coconut oil and a comb. I'm a picker so occasionally I'll sit there and just pick at her head. lol
