Shower or no?

I have a little boy, and now 37wks with baby girl. I teach, and when I met with my principal to discuss leave, she told me I needed to register for gifts somewhere. One of the teachers on my grade level told me to "keep her posted" about possible early labor because she wanted to put something together for me... but no one has said anything about plans... They know I could go any time now that I'm this far along, and I really could use some girl stuff!! Now I just had a Dr.s appointment and he said I probably won't last another week.

Do I scramble out to the store to buy the stuff I registered for? I guess none of it was super essential.. Did I misread their intentions? I feel a little let down!

Re: Shower or no?

  • So your question is, do you scramble out to the store to buy the stuff you registered for?

Yes, it is your responsibility to provide for you baby.  Babies don't need much in the beginning, get the essentials to start with and you can go from there.

  • Yes, at this point if there is anything you absolutely need for the baby, you should buy it yourself.   If it makes you feel better, you can buy it off your own registry so others who might buy you things will know that those items have already been purchased.

  • PP - I understand your situation.  I'm 39 weeks with DD#2 (no boys in this house except for DH...even the pets are girls!)  Even with a second girl, I was told a few weeks ago (as I was frantically trying to wrap up stuff at work, host Christmas at my house for the family and spend QT with DD#1) that I should register.  I didn't and won't; there's nothing but diapers that I need....  Work threw me a shower about a month ago.  If someone told me this late in the game that they'd like to host a shower for me, I'd graciously accept, remind them of my impending due date (in other words the baby won't necessarily wait for a shower) and just wait.  I wouldn't take it personally if nothing happened.  It would be a lot of work  - and some luck - to put together a shower in such short time.  It sounds like your colleagues had good intentions, but may not be that organized.
In response to your question, YES - do go purchase anything you feel is essential.  It is your responsibility.  And, again, don't take lack of a shower personally.  It's my understanding that they're rare, and even then less of a deal, for second babies.

  • If it isn't "super essential" then why do you need to scramble to purchase it? Get what your baby needs. If you have time/money to purchase the extra's then do so if you want.

  • Do an online regersity if you want to with just some small basic no "big stuff" so if someone does want to get stuff for you they can.

  • I am having number 2, boy this time, girl first time.

Not much that I need really as I wasn't expecting a shower and had already been buying clothes and misc. things as I found them on sale.

Anyhow, work and an organization I belonged to have offered to throw small showers, and I asked they be sprinkles, and nothing huge, and also suggested making them diaper and wipes parties as there is really not much else I need at this point. Might be a little forward but I didn't expect or ask for this and felt I should ask for what I need.

If people asked, I also told them diapers and wipes were my tops wants at this point.  I also suggested winter clothing as my last baby was born in the summer, during a record heat wave. I appreciate people's honesty for such things and hope others felt the same for me :-)

  • I think PPs are totally overreacting to this post. OP, go buy what you need and don't expect the shower. If you do get it and have end up with duplicates of things just return it and get something else you need.

  • I'm having a girl as well after my son and made a registry of some girly stuff simply to get the registration completion discount. I wouldn't expect a shower this late in the game. Just go out and get the stuff you need and enjoy the discount!

  • Definitely go get the stuff you need, at my work we have a parent distro, try emailing or talking to other mothers they may have had a girl recently and are willing to get rid of clothes for a small price! Workmates aren't usually well organized when it comes to work showers, just because of the other responsibilities at work. Good lucky sweety!
