My DH and I just wrote up a will after DD was born. ?Nothing big...just a traditional will saying in the event of our deaths she would go to so and so. ?We saw a lawyer for us but you can also get a plain will off the internet and have it notorized. ?Good Luck!
It isn't a big deal to get done and any lawyer can do it. We just met with a lawyer and she asked a bunch of questions, we signed our life away and then she sent us a bill. I think it was about 200.00 if I remember correctly. Now, any additional kids are "automatically" added. Like I asked if we need to put names of our kids on it and she just put Giada et all for all the kids that we will ever have. BTW, we didn't know the lawyer who did ours either.
Our attorney did ours right after DS was born. We discussed everything in detail before we sat down with the attorney....we needed to agree on who would take care of DS and any future children. It costs very little to go through an attorney to get it done. We went that route because we had some specific financial issues and guardianship issues that we wanted spelled out.
If you didn't already know the lawyer, how did you choose him/her? Just a random pick from the phone book?
And if you didn't use a lawyer, are you sure it's legal/valid? I'd just do the Office Depot or internet thing if I could be sure it would be valid...
Thanks!
Yup definitely. We did ours without a lawyer. Look for a form/sample from your particular state as certain laws my vary a little. We also had ours witnessed and notarized when we were done. My father, who has a strong legal background, said it was perfectly fine for our simple situation and completely valid.
My dh has a legal plan through his work so they gave us a listing of local attorneys that took the legal plan. So, we basically did open the phone book and pick a lawyer out.
We went to uslegalforms.com or soemthing like that and paid for the papers and just have to get them notorized. We'll keep a copy and probably give a copy to the couple we have chosen.
