Vitamins.

Ds seems to be getting colds a lot lately, I know it is that time of year, but he's never been one to get colds. He eats well and drinks only water and milk. I am thinking about getting him a multi vitamin, but I am not sure what kind to get. I looked at walmart last night and the one that I saw said it was for 2-3 year olds.

Do you give vitamins? If so, what kind?

Re: Vitamins.

  • Our pedi said we can if we want but it's not necessary. I was concerned about her not getting enough vites by diet since she's a fussy eater. Our pedi said we could do poly-vi-sol if we want.

  • Our pedi didn't even mention a vitamin until I did. He said if I wanted to, I could give poly vi sol, but it wasn't necessary.
  • We gave DD the liquid baby vitamins (Tri Vi Sol) until she was 2 (maybe even 2.5) and could do the My First Flinstones chewable ones. I was really good about giving them to her every day for quite awhile...DS not so much.

He got the liquid vitamins most days while he was mostly drinking breast milk. But in the last several months, all three of us have fallen off the vitamin wagon. Mostly because I forget, not because we changed our minds about them.

  • I don't remember the brand but DS had a bottle of a toddler gummy vitamin with zinc and Echinacea. Could be a fluke but he's a lot healthier this year than last. I got them a Wal-Mart.

  • We don't use vitamins yet but we do put a packet of carnation instant breakfast in his morning and night bottles (half a packet in each).
  • I don't give her any vitamins yet, but I'll start half a Flintstone's Chewable when she turns 2. That's what DD1 gets.

  • I give A two shots of tri-vi-sol.  I think it's an A,C,D mix.  She stays healthier with that for sure and it seems to help her clear colds more quickly too.
Is that an Rx or do you buy it OTC? I'm wanting to give DD something, but I don't think she needs a complete multivit just yet...

  • Our pedi also said they weren't necessary at this age. I keep hearing more about how vitamins and multivitamins are not cure-alls and may in fact do more harm than good. Agree with PP that hygiene is probably the most best thing to focus on.

This!  Thankfully DD has been pretty healthy.  I try to give her foods high in Vit C when I think a colds comming on.  I'm not sure if it help.  If your LO will eat veggies, try broccoli or cauliflower.  If you have better luck with fruits try strawberries and oranges.  Some apple juices even have added vit. c.  I've been getting single serve packages of mandarin oranges in light syrup (can't find any in just water - but I guess I could rince them).  DD loves them!

I give ds the ones made by Dole, they are 100% juice. It is pretty much the only fruit he will eat. @Toni79
