Random racing heart/flutters? Related to progesterone shot?

I keep feeling like I get random heart flutters or racing heart rate when I'm not really doing anything to cause it. Not having any caffeine either. I started getting the progesterone shot two weeks ago, and wondering if its related? I have a doc appointment soon so just waiting til then to talk to him about it. Could be anxiety too, 30 days til wedding. Just thought I would see if anyone has any experience with this.

Re: Random racing heart/flutters? Related to progesterone shot?

  • Heart palpitations/flutters aren't that uncommon in pregnancy, some preggos develop murmurs too. It's when the increased heart rate and palpitations cause more severe symptoms like fainting and shortness of breath that is cause for concern. I've been dealing with the latter and am being followed closely by my docs. Stress and anxiety absolutely play a role! I would definitely mention it to your OB/midwife so they know what's going on.

    GL with the wedding!!!

  • I woke up out of a dead sleep last night, and my heart was beating so fast I could barely tell the difference between beats and I had this wierd horrendous pain all over my chest. Scared the crap out of me and lasted about 30-45 seconds. As weird as it sounds, I was so out of it (from being asleep) it was difficult for me to tell if the pain was like a giant muscle wall cramp, or actually heart related. But goodness gracious it was scary. Almost woke up hubby to go to ER but it subsided quickly and then I was totally fine like nothing had happened. So strange!! Def mentioning to OB at appt this week, and if it happens again I guess I'll go to the ER. Anyone else felt anything like that??!
  • Agree with PPs, likely because of increased blood flow. I'm on week 5 of progesterone shots and haven't had this.

I get this too but it started before pregnancy and is stress related. I'm not a doctor but it sounds like you were having a panic attack in your sleep and it woke you up. I get these too (pretty much only when I'm asleep and not all the time). They are extremely scary but aren't life threatening although it feels like it at the time. Say something to your doctor about it though to make sure that's what it is and not something else. Sorry you are getting them. Not fun.
  • Agree w/ PP.. I also get the shots and haven't had this happen. Doubt it's related.
Maybe mention it to your doc though if it worries you.
  • I get it sometimes in pregnancy, not using any progesterone. My MW said it's just due to the increase in blood. No big deal. It's actually mostly gone away now.

  • I definitely get a racing heart sometimes and agree with PP...just higher blood volume. No need to fear!

  • I was on twice a day progesterone shots for 11.5weeks and never experienced this.
Over the past 1-2 weeks (well off the progesterone) I've begun developing an occasional racing heart beat/feeling that my heart is pounding out of my chest.
It happens, like others said, due to pregnancy.
Good luck planning your wedding :)

  • Glad you asked this! I get them all the time as well and it usually happens when I'm just laying on the couch! I am not taking progesterone though... Good luck with the wedding!
  • I get it too, but PP beat me to it.  But do talk to your Dr about it if you're worried.

  • @mjdavies - thx for the response and reassurance. I hadn't considered a panic attack bc of the crazy pain...but after I read ur post I did some research and it sounds like what I experienced. Glad it doesn't appear to be any sort of cardiac episode. Still gonna mention it to the doc, but feeling a bit more at ease about what happened. Thank you!
  • I get them too for seemingly no reason. Usually when I'm just sitting at my desk at work. Another time it went on for a few hours in the evening, about 10 hours after my morning cup of joe. It felt like caffeine jitters, but it can't possibly be. As long as it goes away, right?

Anytime! Glad it helped ease your mind a bit. There's a lot to stress out about right now so it makes sense.
  • Thanks for the answers!

MarciP83  That's what I have been feeling, but I haven't been woken up by it, that has to be terribly frightening. Usually I'm just sitting doing nothing when it hits. I used to have some anxiety issues in high school so maybe I'm just overly anxious right now too.

Either way I feel better now just knowing I'm not alone thanks!
