Intro and Q about Womens Ob-Gyn in Columbia

Hi everyone!

I'm so happy to be here! I am four weeks pregnant. My DH had a CP in November, so we are hoping this one will stick!

I have been going to Womens Ob-Gyn in Columbia since my loss (we moved recently, so I had to switch doctors anyway). I've not scheduled my first prenatal appointment and I got a bunch of paperwork in the mail, one of which was a form letter that said (among other things) that the first sonogram won't be until at least 18 weeks. Because of my previous loss, this makes me very nervous, but I also know I'm not considered high-risk. Does anyone have any experience with this office and getting sonograms earlier? Do you know if they'll give me one if I ask for one?  Thanks in advance!

Re: Intro and Q about Womens Ob-Gyn in Columbia

  • Hi!  You also posted on my Howard County OB post and I just asked you a question there before seeing this post.  I am almost 9 weeks pregnant and had a tough time getting an appointment with an OB I hope will be good.  I tried to get an appointment with Womens OB because they were recommended by a friend, and it took me almost a week to do so.  First, I was hung up on not once, but twice, with no call back.  Next, I made an appointment and when the paperwork showed up, they changed my appointment without consulting me.  When I called to let them know, one of the receptionists basically lied and said I agreed to that time. There were many other things that occurred, but long story short, I called and cancelled the appointment today because I lost all confidence in how the business is being run.  The friend who recommended them had an appointment earlier this week and she was shocked at the chaos she found.  She called it bedlam.

Anyway, to answer your question, they would probably do an earlier sonogram to date your pregnancy.  Additionally, since you've had a previous loss, they would probably keep a closer eye on you, at least they should.  I would suggest you call and ask, but based on my experience with that route, I am not sure how well it would go.  Good luck!

    p.s.
    Congratulations!  Sorry for the rant.

  • These were my doctors and I had a sonogram the first appt to date the pregnancy, and then another one at the second appointment just to make sure all was well, this was at 8 and 12 weeks.  I didn't have another one til 19 weeks for the A/S.  I think they have to say that because some insurance might not cover a dating U/S
  • @cwprimus That stinks you had such trouble with them!  I don't blame you for going elsewhere. I think I am partial to them because they were AMAZING when I was having my miscarriage. I haven't had any trouble getting appointments there and while it's always busy there, I haven't found it to be disruptive. But, we'll see how I feel after my first appointment! I hope you found someone else great!

@gradbeth, thanks for your input! This puts my mind at ease. I will see what the doc says when I go in next week. :)
