Speech Development and Hearing

So my daughter took a hearing test yesterday.  She has an issue with the middle ear. She can hear high tones, but she cannot hear low tones as well.  So we have been referred to a specialist.  They said it was treatable.

And we are going to have a specialist in speech evaluate her.  She has good motor skills, but her words are random (she is not saying the same word over and over again).  She says Uh Oh or Wee! (Sliding down the slide-but pediatrician said that was not a word).

I am hoping that we can help my daughter with her speech.

Re: Speech Development and Hearing

  • Does she say wee in regards to the slide or just as a sound while sliding?  My DD called slides wee up until a couple months ago.  If we were at the park she would say "more wee!" (or cry that if we were leaving.)

EI has been so helpful for us.  I was so upset when my DD qualified for services even though I wanted her to because it was hard to admit she needed it.  But it has been the best thing for us.  She loves her speech therapist and it has been great for me to have someone I can talk to regularly about her and get feedback on what I can do differently.  I really hope you have as good of luck as we did!

She says Wee! likes it is fun going down a slide or like she is doing something fun.

We went to swim lessons this morning.  And the teacher was talking to the other kids about if they had a doggy or pet at home, and they were responding back to the teacher.  But my daughter did not really respond to the teacher, so I was talking for my daughter.  I talked to the teacher after the class and told her we were going to have a specialist come in and evaluate her on her speech and taking her to a specialist for her hearing.  The teacher told me that they took her daughter when she was younger to a specialist for speech because her daughter was stuttering.  And I had also made the comment that my older child, my son, talked a lot.  And the teacher told me that her daughter was a second child and that second children sometimes have issues with speech--it is like their families talk a lot--their parents or the first child talks a lot-and the second child does not talk as much.

I am hoping that the specialists in speech and hearing can give us feedback and help my daughter with her speech.

  • My daughter went to a specialist for her hearing today. She has fluid in her right ear--she is borderline. They will check her in two months to see if there is still fluid there and if they need to put in tubes in her ear. And the speech therapist evaluated her earlier in the week and said my daughter was normal for her age, and that they would check her in a couple of months to see how she is doing.

DS never had issues with speech delays, but I did notice he really picked up the talking after getting tubes placed.

My DS had chronic fluid in his ears.  Although it never affected his speech he is much happier since he had tubes.  He had four ear infections before tubes and none since.

I also still think "whee" counts as a word because it is expressing something.  In this case, fun or joy about being on a slide.  If she uses it on a slide specifically that definitely counts.

DDs speech therapist also said it's very common for second children to be more delayed with speech (mainly because they do not get all of the 1 on 1 time that older children get).  However, this has proved opposite for us as DD (3) has a speech disorder and DS (16 mos) is a chatter box!  Every kid is different.  Give your DD a bit more time but if you are still concerned then you need to push for help for her.  Do not forget your are her advocate!  Good luck!
  • Just an update-my daughter got tubes in her ears in April.  And she is going to a private speech therapist.  She is still being evaluated by the school district, and we will find out next week what they recommend.  Her words have been very soft in the last couple of weeks, but she is saying more words.

Today, she said Momma clearly and then she said Mommy several times.

  • Good for you for having her checked and following up! It's true that second children often speak later than first borns. For one thing, they are splitting parents' time with another child, unlike oldest kids. For another, their older sibling often talks for them. BUT, that's not always the case. I have a niece who is deaf. Not hard of hearing but deaf. They didn't find out until she was 3 because her pediatrician kept saying "Oh, gee, she's a second child. That's the issue!" So you should always check if you're concerned!

Yay for her saying mama and mommy.  What wonderful words to hear.  I hope the school district recommends therapy for her and is able to help.  DD transitioned into preschool through our county in late winter and it has been wonderful for her.  Thanks for the update!
