Diaper pail and how to save money on it?.

Which diaper pail to buy and how to save money on the refills (I have heard you can use regular trash bags with it) Also , diaper genie or arm and hammer munchkin brand ?

Re: Diaper pail and how to save money on it?.

  • Were registered for the ubi..$79... You use your own trash bags and it's made of metal so it traps oders. From what I've read it's the best option out there but I'm a FTM and I'm just going off what other moms have suggested to me.

  • We have a diaper genie. There's a few off brand refills we buy that fit and that saves money.

  • We have the Munchkin Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail and plan on buying a second. It's great. I never smell diapers even when we open and close it. The refills aren't incredibly expensive. I buy them on sale.
I have heard good things about the Ubbi but have no first hand experience. They are pricey, so if you buy one second hand make sure it has the fix for the bag getting caught installed.

  • I'm a FTM, but I plan on using a flip up lid trash can with regular trash bags. We have used one of these for years for emptying our litter boxes and it has always contained the smell, and let me tell ya, my cats produce some nasty shit (literally). I have read good things about others doing the same thing with their babies.
  • We don't have one. We live in a small condo and throw out diapers in the kitchen trash. We have an open air metal trash can and never smelled a poopy diaper. We take the trash out every other day.

  • We used a diaper genie and had no problems with it.  I actually prefer it to regular trash cans because with the refills you just empty them as needed and the bag size can be as big/small as you need it to be.  If you are using a regular trash bag you don't have that option.

  • When DS was born there was a BRU brand diaper pail and I think it was under $20.  I didn't see it at the store the other day.  We definitely decided to get one that uses regular bags.  The BRU one wasn't anything fancy and it does the trick.  We don't have any problems with odor, but just in case, we have a Febreze stick and refresh stuck to the side of the pail.

We also only use the diaper pail upstairs.  We throw diapers in the kitchen trash (a metal can with flip top lid) and odor isn't usually a problem there.

  • We do not use a diaper pail and I see them as a waste. I personally didn't want dirty diapers sitting in the baby's room when we were done as we can walk to the kitchen or garage and throw them away. That way it'll save you even more money!
  • I have the Safety First one that is like $15 - $20.  It uses regular trash bags.  I put a think of Baking Soda in the bottom and change the bag at least twice a week and that seems to do the trick.  (We've also become pretty skilled at wrapping up the stinky diapers tight to reduce smell)

  • I'm on my 5th child and I've never used one! If u have access to outside garbage. Just put your $ towards something better if u can

  • We used a diaper genie in DSs nursery. It was handy to keep the nasty contained during clean up on blow out days. We moved to just using the regular trash around when he started cruising. Will probably do the same with this kid (genie then regular).

  • Eh. $20 for three refills (each refill lasts 3-4 weeks) is NBD.
We have the diaper genie and have been satisfied with it.

  • And the genie itself is fairly cheap (I think $20-30?).  We live in a house so clearly have access to regular trash, but there is no way I wanted to have to bring every dirty diaper downstairs and out to the garage.  DD is 2 and I still use the genie.

  • After checking reviews on baby gear lab we registered for the diaper genie essentials. Costco here sells big refill packs so money can be saved that way!

  • I heard Arm & Hammer is better and that's what we registered for.
  • Take the diaper trash out daily and you don't need one. Money problem solved. It's when you let it sit there and fester until the diaper pail is full that it gets nasty smelling.

  • We were also deciding between the Diaper Dekor and the Ubbi because it supposedly locked in odor better. DH wanted to get the larger Diaper Dekor because it held up to 60 diapers. I was like if you think that we are going to let the garbage fill up to 60 diapers without taking out the trash you are crazy.

This just reminded me of TLC's My Strange Addiction. I was watching it the other day and this woman is obsessed with smelling dirty diapers and even biting on them, so nasty!

Same as @mrspopsicle. We had one but it stunk even after a good cleaning and it would only hold a few bags. Also a pain to clean. I opted for a trash can with a lid for wet and straight to the garbage in the garage for the stinky diapers.

  • I don't want to spend money on a diaper pale, and so ended up just getting arm&hammer diaper baggies. We will stick the dirty diapers in there and trash them. Hubster will just have to take out the trash A LOT more often.

  • We have the diaper genie.  Never had any issues with smell and the refills last a lot longer than you would think.  I used to just put them on my Amazon Moms subscribe and save list and they were a lot cheaper than any place else.  I plan on doing the same thing this time.

  • We used a diaper genie with #1 and only put poop diapers in it, no need to waste the pee ones in the more expensive refills, just used a regular trash can for the pee ones

We had the diaper Dekor from Target and it was annoying buying 15 dollar refills. My BF got the Ubi and we really like it and it does trap the smell nicely. Only thing I wish it has was the ability to open with your foot. It can be a little challenging to keep a hand on a wiggly toddler and use your hand to open the top. Still worth it, I think.

  • I guess I'm the gross one here. I have the diaper Dekor. I sure as hell let it get full and empty it about once a week. Traps the smell just fine. I don't mind buying the $14 refill because there are two in there and each one lasts a couple weeks, so I only buy refills every couple of months. Not a money saving option, but it works for us.

  • Get the one with the foot pedal to open it!So much easier than the one you have to open with your hand when you're elbow deep in poo
  • We had one with DS and I think his whole first year we used maybe three refill packs. I had easy access to outside garbage can so unless it was the middle of the night or really cold outside I just took it out.
  • We used the Munchkin Arm & Hammer pail for DS but I ended up throwing it away because the smell was awful. It was fine for newborn diapers, and even through the introduction of solid foods, but once DS was fully on solids it just couldn't contain the stink.

We saved money by having the bags auto-delivered via Amazon Subscribe & Save and using our additional Amazon Moms discount.

For this baby we plan to just put diapers into a grocery bag and throw it out each night. No more nasty diaper pails.

  • We have an older model of the Diaper Champ, which allows non-proprietary refill bags...but I think they changed up the design a bit so you can't find it anymore? I don't know, but I got mine at a garage sale.

  • I hated our diaper genie. Probably used it for a month before it went down to storage. Waste of $$ in my opinion.
  • Third kid-no diaper pail for me either. Grocery bag that gets thrown out every night and poops get thrown out right away once they are eating solids. I found both the diaper genie and the diaper champ to be stinky once first baby started having solid poops. And toddler poop-ugh don't even get me started-yuck!:)
  • I hated our Diaper Genie. I am looking into the Diaper Dekkor this time around.
  • We don't have one, I think they're gross. I had one with my first DD and her room always smelled like poop, no matter how often I cleaned it. I got rid of it and started using the little arm and hammer baggies they sell at target. I have used those from day 1 with DD #2 and will do the same this time.
