Tylenol question

DD has a slight fever (100.5) so we just have her Tylenol before bed. Should we give it to her throughout the night or just wait to see what her temperature is in the morning? This is the first time we had to give it to her. She's been congested but didn't have a fever. She got her 4 month shots yesterday and we saw a slight temperature rise but tonight was the first time I saw it over 100.4.

Re: Tylenol question

  • Personally I would wait and see throughout the night as I'm always afraid of over medicating.

  • If she wakes up in the motn, I would take her temp. If it's been more than four hours since the last dose and her temp hasn't gone down, I would give another dose. If she doesn't wake up maybe just feel her forehead in the motn to see if she's hot to the touch. If very hot then wake up to dose and if she feels okay, I'd let her sleep.
  • I would monitor fever and if it is still high in 4 hours give some more. Def call dr if it doesn't break over night. Hopefully your LO feels better! Oh and watch for it to get higher also. I know some dr don't worry until it's over 101

Thanks everyone. She was at 100.2 last night and we decided to give her Tylenol just because she seemed a little off. She was normal all day today but then it went back up at night. Her forehead feels pretty cool right now. Maybe I'll try the temporal thermometer just to check so I don't have to wake her. I hate seeing my LO not feeling well :(.

Edit: the temporal thermometer said 97.7 so it seems to have gone down. I'll check it through the night.

  • My pedi told us that a fever is normal after 4 month shots. She said it's not necessary to treat with Tylenol unless LO seems bothered. DD had a slight fever, but was still her happy self. Pedi said just keep an eye on it...
But a slight fever us normal.

I always check a temp 1-2 hours after the dose to make sure it is going down. I check again at 4 hours to see if it's starting to wear off. I dose again if it's starting to climb again, if not I check again at 6 hours. If it's not staying down without Tylenol by morning I would call the doc, and obviously if you can't keep it down with Tylenol during the night go to the ER. Also, the only way to get an accurate temperature at this age is rectally. I use my temporal artery thermometer if she feels normal and if I get a normal reading I call it good. But if I doubt the temporal artery reading for any reason or if I get a high reading then I check a rectal temp to get an accurate one.

This, only we've never actually had to give Tylenol and i use underarm temp (that's what nicu, did and we've stuck with it).

  • Thanks everyone.  We gave her Tylenol because she did seem off.  She was just cuddling with me and not wanting to play or anything.  That was unusual for her.  She was her happy self this morning though.  The 4 month shots were so much rougher than the 2 month shots!
