Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleeping Through The Night

My daughter is 3 1/2 months old.  She was doing pretty well sleeping through the night, but over the last few days, she is waking up ever 1-2 hours all night long.  I'm not sure if it is her teething or if maybe she isn't getting full enough.  Does anyone have any advice to help her sleep better?  I asked her Pediatrician about rice cereal but they said they don't suggest using rice cereal this early because it could cause food allergies.  Has anyone started using the rice cereal early?  And they has anyone found any tricks to help with teething pain?  We use teething tablets and infant Tylenol.

  • She's probably just going through a phase.  As soon as they start doing one thing with their sleep it changes.  Just go with the flow.  She'll be back to STTN again soon - and then it will change again!
  • Four months is typically a bad time for sleep. Like prev said, check into the 4 month wakeful. Sleep regression is normal.

  • Her pediatrician is actually the one who told me to use infant Tylenol.  I am just following what they told me to try since she is teething so early.  She is only 3 1/2 months and she already has 2 teeth.

  • She's at a normal time for sleep regression.

  • LO had a phase when he was around three months where he slept through the night.  Around four months it was over.  Babies don't really have the same regular clocks we do and are highly variable.  Once you get a routine down something changes and welcome to your new normal.  I would offer her more formula/BM during the day.

Avoid the rice cereal.  30 years ago apparently it was commonplace to give rice cereal around 2-3 months (according to my mother-in-law who was extremely upset when she found out we weren't going to do that).  We know more about nutrition and a baby's needs now.  During the first year the bulk of her nutrients and calories should come from either breast milk or formula.  When you're ready to start solids (minimally after 4 months) it's not to supplement or whatever, it's more to explore.

If she's teething she'll be a little drool factory and hold her mouth a lot, and will probably be extremely upset.  Try putting a pacifier in the fridge for a little bit and giving it to her, that tends to calm down LO.  Our pediatrician recommended baby ibuprofen after he was 6 months old but not before.  Good luck and hang in there.
  • Around the 4 month mark a baby's sleep pattern completely changes. Her sleep is alot more "adult like", meaning she can't just doze off to sleep and stay asleep. She now goes through distinct sleep stages as an adult does. If she doesn't know how to fall asleep on her own, then it's even harder. I would encourage allowing her the opportunity to learn how to fall asleep on her own, so that she can also fall back to sleep on her own when she wakes from a sleep cycle, otherwise this can continue. But before you presume this scenario, wait a few days to make sure it's not just a growth spurt. GL!
  • Larkin220 I never gave my baby the rice cereal.  So actually I did follow what the Pediatrician said.
Thank you everyone for the advice!

  • Teething phases are tough! Some babies sleep the same throughout and others are up a lot. It is normal for teething to disrupt sleep, you just have to ride it out. Tylenol like your Dr. recommended can help. It can also be sleep regression…It is just hard to know until another tooth pops through or her sleep pattern gets better on it's own… and just when it gets better, they get sick and disrupts sleep again… it's a cycle you will have to get used to. Good luck and I I hope it gets better soon.
  • Clove oil, frozen washcloths and pacifiers have been working for us in terms of early teething pain.
  • Thanks everyone for the advice!  I'm trying different things to see what works.  I appreciate all the help!!! :)
