If we have a girl (team green) we love the name Sadie, should we go with Sarah (nn: Sadie) or use Sadie as her first name?

Re: Sadie or Sarah

  • My name is Sarah...I know that Sadie is a classic NN for Sarah, but I don't feel like many people relate the two these days. If you want to call her Sadie, I feel like it's okay to name her that. It's a beautiful name!

  • I'm not sure how you get Sadie from Sarah. I just asked DH what his first reaction is to "Sadie"...he said its a dog name. Which was also immediate reaction. But I do like Sarah.
  • I really like the name Sadie. I'm a Sarah also, and have never heard Sadie being a nn, I've been called Sari by family members.

I guess I'm an SS because I like both =]

  • I had no idea Sadie was a NN for Sarah... I voted Sadie, if that's what you're going to call her anyway. It's pretty.

  • I agree with PP if you're going to call her Sadie, name her Sadie. I like them both but with Sarah prefer the spelling without an "h" i.e. "Sara"

  • I am surprising myself, but I think I prefer just Sadie, if that's what you're going to call her.

  • Love Sadie, especially if you're going to call her that anyway.

  • I don't mind Sadie, but I know a few people who named their dog that, so I would never use it. I like Sarah, but I'm confused by the NN Sadie. I agree that if you really like Sadie to just use it.
  • Sadie times a million. Sarah is the most boring name in the universe.
    Wow.

OP, if you want to call her Sadie, do it. It's a lovely name. I beg to differ about my name, though. I think Sarah is one of the loveliest and most classic girl names out there. Still, if you know that you intend to call her Sadie and you have no reason for wanting to put Sarah on her birth certificate (like, naming her after a grandmother), I vote that you name her Sadie.

  • I prefer Sarah over Sadie, but if your going to call her Sadie anyway just name her that.
  • I love Sarah!
  • Unfortunately, I know way to many dogs named Sadie so I would go with Sarah.

  • Sara is one of my favorite names! BUT if you're going to call her Sadie and you love that name then just name her Sadie. It's a nice name.

  • I have a SIL named Sadie who's in her 20s, and so to me I see the name as easily able to stand on it's own. I think these days it would seem odd as a nickname to Sarah, despite how it may have originated.

  • I'm personally not a fan of Sadie.

I usually don't subscribe to the idea of dog names vs human names when the name is legit, but I don't know a single human Sadie.  I grew up with a dog named Sadie, plus known many other dogs with that name.

It may not be right, but I can't help it. I hate it as a person name.  Also, if on a person, I see it more as a nickname than a formal name.

  • Oops, I think I voted wrong.

I love the name Sarah. Love love love. I have never heard Sadie as a nickname. There is no D in Sarah so this seems like quite the stretch.

If you are determined to call her Sadie, then name her Sadie. I like Sarah more than Sadie though.
  • I agree it is a dog name for me, too. Along with Bailey, Riley, and several other names that I have only actually known on dogs. I am sure there are delightful people with the name though.

Sadie is the mean character on the popular show Awkward. That is the only other reference I get besides dogs.
  • I say Sadie, since that is what you will be calling her.

While I have a SIL with that name, like I said above, she has said her whole life people always tell her that their dog's name is Sadie upon meeting her. So, in that respect, I agree with PP.

Sadie is not a nn for Sarah.

Actually, it is. And has been for a loong time. As is Sallie/Sally.

"The earliest usage of Sadie was as a informal pet name for the more formal Sarah. The Hebrew name Sarah has an ancient tradition dating back to time of Abraham, possibly as early as 2000 BC. But almost 4000 years later, at the end of the 19th century and through the 20th, Sadie has become a popular name, completely independent of Sarah."

But yes, it is also seen as a standalone by many.

    Thanks for sharing

  • Sadie is a dog name for me. We have friends who just named their daughter Sadie, though, and it seems to be gaining popularity, so I your LO may not have that issue as she gets older.

I do think Sadie is a bit childish, though. So for that reason alone, I would name her Sarah, even if you plan to call her Sadie. At least then, she has a more professional name for resumes and such if she chooses.

  • I'm probably just a weirdo, but when I see Sadie I always see "sad." I think it's because I first encountered the name in children's lit and didn't know the right pronunciation. I voted for Sarah, but its hard to get excited about that name since I knew dozens of them growing up.
