High-Risk Pregnancy

Funneling..

Just as some background, I was diagnosed with cervical incompetence after my first pregnancy and I had a preventative cerclage placed at 14w.  I posted in a thread yesterday that I had some funneling last week that looked like it went away when the baby changed positions.  Well, I saw my MFM yesterday, and there was still quite a bit of funneling.  They actually weren't sure if it was actual funneling, or a contraction that made it look like funneling?  I wasn't really clear on that because they didn't seem too sure themselves.  But she said either way, my cervix was still shortening.  I am bummed out because things have been going well so far this pregnancy (I am 27w6d and gave birth to DD at 23w4d) so I started to think I might make it to full term this time and avoid the NICU.  The MFM thinks I will probably make it until 30w, and after that who knows at this point.  They are going to give me the steroid shots this week just in case.  Even though I'm bummed, I am going to do as absolute little as possible and try to prove them all wrong and go full term :)  Anyone experience anything similar?

Re: Funneling..

  • I am only 21 weeks w a cerclage so I can't be much help with a similar circumstance, but I was wondering if you knew your cervical length? Was the funneling at the point on the cerclage or above/below it?  What have you been doing so far per doc instructions (progesterone suppositories, taking it easy, bedrest)?

  • I think it was down to 2.5cm or so and it was still above the cerclage.  I know that it's still ok currently, but it just looks like it's starting to progress/worsen and they expect it to continue.  I get weekly p17 shots.  I take it easy as much as possible, but I have a 3y/o and my husband is sometimes away in the evenings, so occasionally I make dinner and put her to bed, etc. or go to the store.. nothing overly strenuous but I am active.

  • I'm not a regular poster on this board (or much at all on The Bump anymore really!), but I wanted to let you know that I had essentially no measurable cervix and was 1 cm dilated at 24 weeks (too late even for a rescue cerclage) and went on to deliver my son on his due date.  I was also on p17 shots and hospital bedrest for the first 32 days and then home bedrest (continued p17) for the remainder of the pregnancy.  I took the bedrest and hydration VERY seriously and I like to think it helped.  After 37 weeks I was a bit more active and still went on to my due date.  I'm sure tucking your LO in at night will not put you into labor.  Hang in there mama!  You can do this!!

  • Keep us updated! I am not on bed rest either, but trying to take it easy (with a job and a 2.5 year old...sigh).  My cervix is at 3 mm at 21 weeks.  Can they monitor you again in a week?  I would ask them to do this.  In the mean time, I agree- stay hydrated and rest up.
  • I had a preventative cerclage at 13wks after two 2nd tri losses. And I'm also on weekly 17p injections.

The MFM found funneling all the way down to the cerclage at 19wks. He straight out told us that if the cerclage hadn't been in place we would've lost baby. At that point I pretty much thought everything was over but both my Dr and the MFM assured us that the cerclage was doing it's job and they put me on bedrest. I'm 25 weeks today and the doctors have pretty much stopped doing cervical checks until/unless something changes. But over the last couple of days I've been feeling lots of kicks "down there" so hopefully I can talk the Dr into checking to see if there's been any change.

It's definitely nerve wracking, and not an easy situation to be in but hang in there. Lots of t&p going your way.

  • I just have gave birth to a 9lbs 6oz baby this nov. I had a preventive cercalge due to 21wk loss back in 2012. I started to funnel at 26wks, with bedrest and 17p shots I made it to 39wks 2days would have made it futher but I begged to take baby out. Your cervical length is good. At 27wks I was 1.8cm good luck.. I am sure you will go futher then 30wks
  • Thanks ladies!  I appreciate hearing other people's success stories, and good luck to everyone going through something similar!  I go next week to both my regular OB and the MFM so we'll see what happens.  Thanks again!
