Breastfeeding

Breastmilk and Sudafed

I have some killer nasal congestion right now and all I want to do is take some sudafed but I know it can affect my milk production.
Do you think I could counteract that by drinking some Mother's milk tea or do you think my supply will still be affected either way?

Re: Breastmilk and Sudafed

  • It will affect your supply.  I took sudafed to dry up when I was ready to stop and thought I'd need to take it for 7-10 days... after two days I was getting almost no milk.  There are lots of other BFing-safe decongestants out there, though, so don't lose hope.

  • Per Kellymom, one study showed actual pseudophedrine permanently decreased supply in some women.  However, the same was not shown for phenylephrine (Sudafed PE).  That's not to say it can't happen - this isn't an area that's widely studied, but it will really probably be individual-specific.  I took phenylephrine and had no adverse affects, but I'm sure some people are different. Afrin is listed as less safe than pseudophedrine and phenylephrine, but still considered relatively safe for breastfeeding.  I recommend looking it up on Kellymom.
