Vomiting

Ugh, I took Nyquil last night because I am sick but apparently L woke up at 3 this morning vomiting.  My husband went in there with him, changed the sheets and laid down with him again and he went back to sleep and woke up vomiting at 6.  His not-very-smart parents then gave him some water and tried to feed him -- he's had a cough for the last few days and thought he might just be coughing so much he is vomiting -- and he vomited that up (three times).  Our nanny is home with him and said he just vomited again after just a little water.  I told her to wait two hours and then try a little water again.  He doesn't have a temp (97) and before this just had a cold.  He bonked the back of his head on the floor last night when he was practicing walking, but I wouldn't call it a "head injury."  Was thinking if he's still vomiting circa 2pm we should call doc just to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated.  Anything else you guys would recommend?

A barfy baby is just the saddest. :(

  • Aww!  Poor baby.  I hope he feels better soon.  I would just say try to keep him hydrated.  Try a few sips every 10-20 minutes until he can keep something down.  I wouldn't start to worry about dehydration until he hasn't kept anything down for 24 hours.  If you start to get really worried, try Pedialyte.  Once he can keep fluids down, switch to the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce & Toast) until things seem to be getting back to normal.

  • I don't have any great advice for you, but I hope he feels better soon :( I'd call the doc ASAP but I'm crazy paranoid.

    Poor kid, poor you :(

  • Thanks ladies!  @stephcarter I am super paranoid too.  Trying to not freak out since he is generally in a good mood besides the barf attacks.  Fingers crossed he'll keep the water down and we can progress to BRAT as @Ken&Anna suggested.  I will be sleeping in his room tonight for sure.

  • We just got off the phone with the pedi nurse because our daughter has a stomach bug for the first time and I wasn't sure what to do for her.  She said no food or drink for 2 hours after vomiting and then we can give 1 TBS of Pedialyte or watered down Gatorade every 15 or 20 minutes.  After 4 hours of no vomiting we can up it to 2 TBS and after 8 hours of no vomiting we can reintroduce solid foods but should  start bland.

As others have said, the nurse told us we should have at least 1 pee diaper in an 8 hour period.

  • Well after a vomit free afternoon he threw up a little before bed. He's sleeping now but I might sleep in there with him bc I am a freak. Taking temp again tomorrow and calling doctor. Thanks all for giving this first time mom advice!
