Pregnant after IF

2nd around?

Anyone get their BFP after IF and go on for LO # 2 or 3, etc..? Did you try naturally first? Did LO #1 have to be weaned before RE would start a new cycle? How long did you try naturally before going back to your RE? We had a successful IUI (with unexplained IF) and I'm looking to get started on baby 2, but I want to be ready. I have no problem starting TTC on our own, but I'm not sure how long we should try before going for help again. I'm 35 and TTC is supposedly harder from now on. So I'm indecisive on how long to wait before going back to see my RE. Also, we are in the process of weaning LO and I'm not sure the RE will start an IUI while I'm currently breast feeding.

Re: 2nd around?

  • I'm pregnant now with my 2nd IF success story. :) My DD was about 9/10 months when we started fertility treatments for #2. My issue is anovulation, so when I never got my period after having my DD I knew trying on our own was pointless. Of course, I was breastfeeding during that time, so I didn't really give my body chance to bounce back. However, I didn't feel like wasting my time by waiting for something that probably wouldn't happen. As soon as we weaned from breastfeeding we went back to my RE. They will not do an IUI cycle or any medicated treatment until you are done breastfeeding.

Everyone is different though. I know a woman who had a surprise BFP when her 1st (an IVF pregnancy) was only 4 months! Go with the timeline that feels right to you. It took us about 9 months of fertility treatment to get pregnant with this baby, so I'm glad we didn't wait. However, after this baby we're just going to let nature take it's course. I'll never be on birth control. If my post baby body miraculous initiates ovulation and I get pregnant great, but that would be truly a miracle.

Best wishes with your family planning decisions. I have to say there are different emotional challenges with going through fertility treatments with a little one. I struggled with a lot of guilt. Ultimately though it was what was right for our family and we couldn't be more thrilled to have #2 on the way.

  • Hi there!

My answers will be sketchy. For us we had severe MFI and went straight to treatments for #2. We did not even try on our own. We had two embies from our IVF, so that helped make the decision, plus hubby is still scarred from our IF struggles. There was no way to get him on the timed intercourse train.

I'm not sure how IUI works, and I know that my RE would not do a cycle with me if my prolactin level (which is elevated during BF) was high. I remember them asking me if I BF in the past year.

You may want to call and see if you can talk to a nurse to get that info so you can plan. Otherwise, if you have insurance, maybe you can just do the consultation with your RE and have him/her plan it all out for you. Then you will know exactly what the timing looks like and can plan accordingly. Good luck!

  • You will need to wean before starting any medicated treatment. I dont ovulate but still TTC on own for 4 months before heading back to treatment. I wish I had just went back. HTH and good luck.
