Supply after illness

Hi all - anyone have any sense of how long it took your supply to return to normal after being sick for a while? I'm just getting over a double-whammy of what we think was food poisoning followed by a stomach bug. Suffice it to say, there has been a lot of vomit so far in 2014. DD has mainly been OK just nursing super frequently, and I did wind up dipping into my stash a few times in the past few days. I'm now hydrating like crazy and slowly adding food into my life, but definitely saw a drop in output when pumping today.

Anyone have a sense of when things really got back to normal after something like this? I have some milk saved up, but only average about 30oz in the freezer at any point in time, and it's down to about 20 now.

Thanks!!

  • I had this same thing happen and it probably took me a couple of weeks to get back to normal. I don't know if you work or not, but I suspect mine would have regulated sooner if I wasn't mostly pumping at work and could have fed him directly.

  • I'll be watching this thread.  I have been sick with a cold, now sinus infection for the past week and my pumping output has drastically decreased.  I am now  2-3 oz short of what I need to send to DC the next day.  On top of that, at his 6 month appt on Monday, they mentioned that his weight gain was on the low side and we needed to up his intake of milk.  So now I am just stressed, which is the last thing I need to be.  I hope your supply comes back up shortly!

Yeah, this is what I'm concerned about. Things seem OK when she can just nurse constantly (though she is definitely eating around the clock), but today I'm back at work, and my pumping output is just dismal (yesterday I got ~2oz/session, and today between 2 and 3; that means I'll be able to get 8-10oz, and she drinks 12-14 while we're apart). I've kind of accepted the fact that I'm probably going to have to keep up pumping and nurse as much as possible, but also supplement a bit over the next week or two...don't like it, but I don't really have much else to try, and since she also had a touch of what I had (including diarrhea), I really don't want to risk her getting dehydrated. Blargh.
