Extra iron?

Our twins are 33.1 and they just started adding iron to their milk (all my breast milk). They first said that for babies who are only doing breast milk, generally they don't get enough iron. When I asked what their levels were she looked it up and their levels are fine (12 and 13). I hate giving them something they don't need. She said preemies can't get "too much" iron, but I find that hard to believe. Anyone else get extra iron when it wasn't really necessary?

First u/s 7/11/2013 - TWINS!!! 120 and 124 heartbeats <3
Second u/s 7/29/2013 - wiggley babies! 178 and 184 heartbeats!
Third u/s 9/9/2013 - 157 and 161 heartbeats ... a BOY and a GIRL!!!! Cervix on the "shorter side" (3-3.3) - going to check again in 2 weeks.
Fourth u/s 9/23/2013 - Baby A = 157 Baby B = 150 heartbeat. Cervix now 2.3-2.6 ... being referred to a MFM
MFM Appointment 9/26/2013 = Both babies healthy, cervix now measuring at 4 - Playing tricks on me ... will follow up in 2 weeks.
Cervical check 10/7 with regular OB - 2.1cm  --- going BACK to the MFM armed with ultrasound pictures from my OB of my cervix. *sigh*
MFM Appointment 10/8 - confirmed my cervix at 2.1cm - putting me on Progesterone for a week.
MFM Appointment 10/17 - Cervix unchanged! Keeping me on Progesterone - followup 10/29

    My DD was on an iron supplement but they said her iron was low and that's very common with preemies. I'd ask the doctor on call about it since the nurse said their levels were fine.

    Our LO was anemic right from the start and we've been giving poly-vi-sol with iron ever since. If you aren't comfortable with it, keep asking until you get an explanation.

    @McSweets - I see you were on progesterone. Was it the shot version?

    This for us too! LO had a transfusion due to anemia and almost had to have a second that would've delayed our discharge. Luckily it went up...slowly, but surely. My pedi says it's super common in preemies and all babies go through a dip after birth.

    If you are not comfortable with their answers, then definitely ask more questions until you are. My baby was anemic and required iron supplements for a couple of months (we also used Poly-vi-sol with Iron).

    Yup, we've been on the Poly-Vi-Sol w/iron drops as long as I can remember for both of our girls. Iron levels are good, but I have no issue continuing. Our pedi has alluded to keeping them on them until their second birthday, just to be sure we're covered.
    TTC Since 11/10 due to Unexplained IF 
    4 Rounds of Clomid, 2 Rounds of Femara + IUI, 2 rounds of IUI+ Injectables (Bravelle + Menopur) = First BFP! TWIN GIRLS!

    November 2, 2012 - Claire (2lbs 8.9oz) and Paige (2lbs 10oz) arrive at 29w3d due to PTL and pPROM at 28w5d

    How did you know a transfusion ws necessary? Just regular pedi check up? And yes @lacijaxx I had progesterone, but it was the suppositories.

    @Mcsweets - thank you! I was on them as well, but stopped at 12 weeks. Interesting to hear you were on them later in the pregnancy. I'm just trying to be informed/educated for the next pregnancy.

    Hope your babies are doing well.
