I have been dealing with this since before Thanksgiving. I will fully admit I ignored my symptoms for awhile not sure why I was having pain and just hoping it would go away, stupid I know. Anyway, right before Christmas I called my MWs and they treated me first with All Purpose Nipple Ointment, and we have progressed to Fluconazole which is where we are at now. I've been on it for 8 days, I started to see some improvement on day 6, bleeding was gone (though now I feel like I see another crack but it's not bleeding), nipples' appearance is improving, and I'm in less pain (though still far from comfortable when nursing). Pain and burning are still there, though not as bad as before I started Fluconazole.
I'm just hoping someone can look at what I've been doing and offer further suggestions if I have left anything out, I just want this gone!!!
Here's what I'm doing:
Topical:
All Purpose Nipple Ointment 4 times a day
Grapefruit Seed Extract 4 times a day (made with 10 drops and 1 oz distilled water)
Oral:
Fluconazole 2 times a day (first dose was a mega dose of 4 pills)
Garlic Pills 2 times a day + 1 clove a fresh garlic a day
Probiotics I have three different ones, I take one pill of each a day (separated at least an hour from the grapefruit seed extract)
Grapefruit Seed Extract Pills 2 pills 4 times a day
Misc:
I change my disposable nursing pads every time I nurse
Have cut two holes in an old shirt so when I'm around the house I just leave my nipples open to the air
Dropped from 5 nursing sessions to 4. I was hoping to do this anyway, but having thrush really gave me a push to drop that 5th nursing session
15 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract in every load of laundry I do
DS never had symptoms, but I suspect this all started when he was on antibiotics. The doctor refused to treat him but I did Gentian Violet once a day for seven days. I also just started a probiotic with him as well, once a day. He may have had the start of a yeast diaper rash, I am treating it with a Grapefruit Seed solution, which I use at every diaper change and Lotrimin Cream twice a day and plenty of bare bottom time. We have switched to disposable diapers and will probably stick with this for a week. His rash cleared pretty quickly, but I'm scared to go back to our cloth (we use prefolds). I treated our cloth diapers and wipes with a 20 minute soak of 70 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract and an extra rinse with vinegar.
I just want to make sure I'm not leaving any stone un-turned because this is just terrible! I'm so scared they are going to try to tell me to wean.
The only thing I haven't attempted is to clean the toys. I have an older daughter and of course we have tons of toys and surfaces DS could be chewing on at any given time, I don't even know how to attempt to go about treating all the toys in the house. I haven't pumped in a very long time (pre-thrush for sure), DS does not get bottles, rarely drinks out of cups and does not get a paci. Thank you so much if you have gotten this far! I just need to make sure I am doing everything!
