Question for STM's - parents visiting

As some of you know DH and I are from NZ but living in Seattle. We have just started talking with my parents about when they might come and visit after baby is born. We get on great and I think they will come for about 2-3 weeks.

I'm due June 4th and right now we are thinking they might come from about June 25th, giving us a few weeks to settle into things first. (I know I might go earlier or later, but in the interests of keeping things simple we're just working off my due date.)

What do you STM's think?

Re: Question for STM's - parents visiting

  • I don't know about your doc, but mine won't let me go over 7 days overdue. So that would still give you 2 weeks to settle in. I think it sounds like a great plan.

  • No advice but we're also far from our families and I'm setting up a calendar so we have all the help we need with bits of rest/alone time interspersed. My MIL will come as close to the birth as possible and will likely stay for a month and then my FIL, Dad, and two BILs will likely come in the next two or three months for a week or two each. I think it will be great to have family around to help with the newborn (but I get along great with everyone and am totally willing to tell these people to go away if I need space).

I'm also making it abundantly clear that anyone who comes will be put to work and will not be entertained (unless sitting on the couch with me watching movies and nursing is entertaining). Hopefully we're all still friends by the end :)
  • Sounds like a good plan!  I really appreciated having some help around especially after DH went back to work.  I think planning for an estimated week or two after LO arrives is a great time frame.

  • Sounds like a pretty good plan. I am due June 5th and my ILs live several states away. They plan on coming the 15th-20th so I'm glad I will have a little while before they get here, just like you!

Thankyou! This has given me great confidence we're doing the right thing. Can't wait for my parents to come visit <3

@joules235 what is your DH studying? NZ is such a great little country (of course I'm biased) and I get the feeling you guys would love it as you seem like outdoorsy people.
