1st Trimester

Question about twins - saw 2 sacs - anyone find a hidden twin at 12 weeks - 9 wk u/s pic

at my first ultrasound we saw 2 sacs but only one baby. It was measuring 8 weeks  days. They said the other one probably already was lost and reabsorbed into the side since  I didnt bleed at all.

that was an external u/s at my high risk Dr

4 days later I went to my OB and she wanted to do an internal.

Heres the pic from that visit.

You can see 2 sacs- one baby- the external got a better view of the size of the empty sac and its almost the same size as the other one

Anyway.....we could see something flickering in the background like a another heartbeat almost, all the way the to the bottom right of the sac with the baby. she said its probably the umbilical cord but not sure. baby measured 9 weeks that day

This is our 5th baby and I feel so different than I ever have. soo tired I can barely make it through the day.

would love some opinions on this pic, and her machine is about 25 years old so it was hard to make out

I go back in 2 weeks- wondering if anyone has gone through something similar. I mean if another baby shows up in that sac then really this pregancy was spontaneous triplets i guess.

thanks for reading!!

  • thanks for replying I was asking more if anyone had a twin hiding in the back and then show up at the 12 weeks u/s

  • Hidden twins past eight weeks are rare, but when it happens it is almost always with mono-di or mono-mono twins...those types share a gestational sac. Since your u/s appears to show two separate sacs (di-di) it would be extremely rare to miss a growing baby, especially with a transvaginal u/s. My mono-dis were very easy to see at 6wks, no question as to twins at all. I'm sorry you're dealing with the uncertainty, but I'd trust what your OB and HR doctor said.

I'm confused now that I re-read your post saw the bolded part. What is the causing you to think triplets?

  • My two sac twins were clear as day at my 7w ultrasound. If you had both an internal and external u/s and in both the sac was empty... It's probably empty. And yes, the internal machine my OB used was old too... It was huge, I've never seen anything like it. Maybe your OB will find another baby but vanishing twin does happen

  • I had a hidden twin one was behind the other that didn't get found until I lost them at 16 weeks, but in all my ultra sounds it only showed one sac and they thought it was a single pregnancy
  • I had twins at 6 week u/s... One had hb and the other had sac, fetal pole, but no hb yet. At my 8 week u/s the second twin had completely vanished. I had no bleeding. But a healthy singleton thus far, now.
