WWYD? Ice skating 17 weeks pregnant

So I'm going to my cousins bachelorette party on Saturday in San Francisco. They are planning to go ice skating during the day in Union Square. Honestly I didn't think anything of it until DH said "you're not gonna ice skate are you?" Ill be 17 weeks pregnant on Thursday. What would you ladies do?

I am not a great ice skater, so I probably would not do it. At 17 weeks, it is likely that your balance would have changed somewhat, too, making it trickier.

That said, I did go skiing in my first tri with DS, and I rode my bicycle daily commuting till about 24 weeks or so and would have even longer had I not had a bicycle malfunction, so I don't think all balance sports are out for the pregnant ladies. It really depends on how you feel about it.

I agree it depends on how good you are on skates. If you do it a lot maybe? If you seldom do it probably no, too much risk you'll lose your balance and come down hard. I'd check with your dr to be sure.

This is a tricky one. I did several things during pregnancy that probably raised a few eyebrows. I agree with calling your doc. You can fall a lot harder on ice than on the ground, since your feet can just go flying out from under you. It also depends on how much you feel that your balance has been affected lately.

I am a pretty good skater, but I think I'd take a pass on this activity. I was a little unsteady on my feet as a pg woman. That plus crazy kids on the ice is enough to make me worry about my safety. This may be an overly cautious avenue, but better safe than sorry IMO.

Sorry to be a party pooper but I would advise against it. Growing up in the northeast I would consider myself pretty good on skis and skates but you should avoid both when pregnant, falling on ice is much more dangerous than on the ground. Union Square has pretty good shopping though! While they are skating grab a hot cocoa and cheer from the sidelines or hit the stores!

Sorry but I have to say I would not do it. Too risky and too much to lose if G-d forbid you fall. When I was pg, DH wanted to keep me in a bubble so he wouldn't have allowed it anyway. Sit on the sidelines and have a cup of coco.

No way. When I was pg I fell in the supermarket and was rushed to hospital BC there is a huge risk of abruption with a fall.

I wouldn't do it either.  I agree with @chiwifey - hot cocoa and shopping!

I wouldn't either. I fell on ice in front of my house in 2nd tri and had to have a NST as per my OB. my friend fell at 20 weeks last week and didn't feel movement for 2h and went in to have the same. Hot cocoa and shopping sounds like it would be nice. Have fun!

Thanks ladies! You are all so totally right. Not worth the risk, and knowing my luck something would happen. I guess I'll just have to tell DH since I'm not skating ill be shopping instead! Haha he'll love that

Strange, I would have said yes if you are a decent skater. However, I was playing tennis at 24w. However, if you have any doubt, don't do it and shop instead

I rode my mountain bike during pregnancy, until my belly was big enough to interfere with pedaling. I didn't do any crazy trails though and I had been riding a lot prior to getting pregnant. It all depends on your comfort level. Enjoy your hot cocoa and shopping!

In my head I'm a decent ice skater but honestly I haven't been ice skating in years. The last time I went roller skating was 4 yrs ago.

I would have to agree with the "nays".  Unless you ice skated on a regular basis and knew there wouldn't be any rough housing kids around, I would definitely opt for the shopping and hot cocoa (as long as it had marshmellows in it)!  :-)
