Brushing teeth- HOW?

How are you all brushing LO'S teeth? Do they fight you or do they like it? What kind of toothbrush are you using?

I hold him because he hates it and barely let's me into his mouth. So yeah, it's a fight! We just recently switched from a finger brush to a 0-2 year old toothbrush. He wasn't really tolerant of the finger brush but he's worse with the actual toothbrush.

ETA: We also let him brush himself, which he enjoys, but I know he's mostly just sitting there chewing the toothbrush and not actually brushing. Hence why when I want to brush I have to literally hold him down!

  • We use a a 0-2 tootbrush (I think it's a colgate) and training toothpaste. We brush after his bath. Some days he is more cooperative then others and he will actually give us a turn, but most days he wants to hold the toothbrush. He use to just suck on the toothbrush, but my husband and I have been modeling for him how to brush his teeth by brushing our teeth in front of him. He is starting to get it. He has been moving his toothbrush over and around his teeth and making brushing motions with it.
  • LO loves to get his teeth brushed so it is really not an issue.  I brush for him then I let him "brush".  I use a little tooth brush I got at target and training tooth paste.

  • We use a Radius soft bristle brush.

    And Nuk toothpaste

She loves it. It took about a week (she didn't have teeth until past a year old) of going AHHHH and brushing with her, but now it is part of our routine. I hold her while I brush her teeth. She doesn't spit out yet - not sure if I should be encouraging that?

  • We only have 3.5 teeth. :) But I started to get a fight, so we switched to brushing her teeth in the bath and that has been fun for her for some reason. I let her brush first then I "help", but for control I turn her around so her head is to my chest and lean over her with one hand holding her forehead steady. It's working for us for now.
  • Forgot to add we use a Oral B stage 1 toothbrush. No toothpaste, just water. Running it under the facet renews her interest in brushing her teeth too. We also have the banana teether/toothbrush that she loves to chew on, but I felt with her finally getting some teeth she needed a "real" toothbrush.
  • We use the kids toothbrush from target - it comes is a toothpaste & toothbrush package? DS isn't a fan but he tolerates it. I hold him in my lap (and hold his hands) while DH brushes the teeth. DS likes to grab the toothbrush and chew on it.

We have a little Elmo toothbrush. We brush her teeth after she's in the crib in her sleep sack. It's the last thing we do before bed. She's fine with it, I think because she likes the Apple banana toothpaste. But we're almost out and it was infant toothpaste. Not sure if there is a difference between infant and toddler but there were a lot more options in toddler toothpastes that I saw, that's why I had asked for recs

ETA: we brush for her at night. During they day if she's in the bathroom with me I'll give her the toothbrush so she can "brush" by herself but really she just chews on it and tries to suck any remaining toothpaste off.
  • We brush in the bath. It's the first part of the bath, before the water gets soapy/peed in. Sometimes we put toothpaste on the brush and give it to her and she chomps a bit and sucks at the toothpaste, other times we need to do it, so it's a quick whizz in her mouth with the toothbrush, as much as she'll let us.

She enjoys it or doesn't mind, nothing worse than that.
