Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

D&C or Misoprostol?

On Fri I had an US and saw the heartbeat of my baby but was only measuring 6 weeks. I knew something was wrong. I had been spotting red and brown for a week at that point. Yesterday I bled massively all day. Had an US today and I did not get everything out naturally so I have to either chose to have a D & C or take the Miso. I have an rx for percocet and miso in front of me but truthfully I am terrified. I just don't know what to do! Party of me feels it would be easier just to have surgery. I don't want labor like pains and hours of cramping other the toilet.

Any advice for me?

The only thing that is making me think I should bite the bullet and deal with the pain is that I do want to TTC again. I am afraid that it will effect my fertility.
Thank you so much in advance!

Re: D&C or Misoprostol?

  • My experience is I have had 2mc and both times done the miso and it didn't completely work so I had to have the D&C anyways. Both times it was 2 months later until everything was finally over. My only fear with this past one was having to wait 2-3 cycles to try again if I had a D&C. I just had my 2 week follow up and I was surprised my dr told me we could try after I get my period. My opinion is to go with the D&C. I had an aweful bleeding experience with the miso. The D&C was so much easier. Everyone is different though. Good luck!

  • I'm sorry you even have to make this decision. It's such a personal decision. For me, I didn't want to take any of the risks of a surgery even if they are small. I was scared to take the miso too, but felt prepared after reading the many threads here describing what to expect. It was as bad as I expected, but if I had it to do again (god I hope not), I would choose to it naturally again. Also it seems that you will get AF faster after natural m/c compared to D&C so you can try again faster. I miscarried on Dec 17 and I'm pretty sure I already ovulated one week ago today.

These were just the thoughts I had when I had to make the same decision. You have to make the decision best for you. Good luck!

  • I was too far along to have much of a choice, but I know I personally couldn't handle waiting for the miso to work. I had to wait until the next day to get my D&C and couldn't sleep all night. We saw no heartbeat on the u/s, just a tiny flicker left (previously had a strong heartbeat) and was measuring a week behind (should have been over 13 weeks). The doctor explained that the last of its life was leaving and the flicker was the the baby dying off. There was clearly no chance of survival and it was long gone, but I couldn't control the thoughts in my head that my baby was slowly dying inside me and there was nothing I could do about it. I had this awful feeling (though I knew it wasn't true) that the baby was suffering. The D&C provided some measure of closure for me.

That said, this is a very personal decision. I'm sure you have discussed the pros and cons of both with your doctor. You have to make an informed decision for what's best for you both physically and emotionally.

  • if you are on a pc, my sig has my blog linked. You can read what my miso experience was like. My infertility doc (RE) doesn't do d&cs unless medically needed so I didn't really get to choose.

  • I think you can find advice on either side. My DR does not do the Cytotec and working in OB I see it Not work more times than it does. I would.personally have a D&C (and have). So sorry you have to deal with making this decision.
  • I couldn't do the miso, I was just too scared. I am having a d&c tomorrow.

  • I did the miso and did not have a bad experience. I find menstrual cramps to be worse. It worked within about 6 hours of taking it. I have read many bad experiences though unfortunately. I was lucky to have the experience that I did. I had a repeat ultrasound the week after taking it which showed that there was no tissue left. Best of luck with your choice. I am sorry you're here.

  • I had a pretty good experience too with the medically induced miscarriage. I just got done a weekend of the Miso. 4 pills inserted on fri night and 4 pills inserted Saturday morning. Started to bleed and cramp Saturday, Sunday morning I passed a big clot. Other than that I've just experienced regular cramps and a moderate amount of bleeding and small clots. It seems to be lingering , I have an US on thurs to see if I expelled everything.
It was an emotional experience at first but now I'm looking forward to a fresh start.
    Good luck!
  • I took cytotec and wish I had a D&C. It was quite painful and I feel a little traumatized about it. I wrote my experience with it in my post "A month Later"

Complete opposite. My first pg ended in a D&E at 13w. They did not remove everything, I had a fever and than had to take miso to finish the job.

Tomorrow I have another D&E, but since I'm so far along they will do an u/s the entire time. Fx they get everything.
