Pregnant after 35

Suggestions to ease the digestive system?

I know those with true morning sickness are going to roll their eyes (and I totally understand that), but my most uncomfortable pregnancy symptom to date is intestinal distress.  I can just remind myself I'm pregnant when I see the bloat in the mirror, but I'd like to minimize the stomach aches, cramping and related symptoms we don't discuss in polite company if possible.

I am drinking tons of water and ginger tea.  (That does seem to help some.)  While I don't have morning sickness, I do have severe food aversions, so I'm mostly eating vegetables, yogurt and cheese right now.  I just can not eat meat, and I'm mildly allergic to milk so that's out.  I tried skipping the cheese for a couple of days, but it didn't seem to matter and I felt shaky without the protein source.

I'm sort of out of ideas. I've been advised not to do the deep twists in yoga or stretching, which takes away my primary strategy for dealing with intestinal distress when I'm not pregnant.  If anyone has a pregnancy-safe strategy to suggest, I'd appreciate it

Re: Suggestions to ease the digestive system?

  • Someone posted a constipation cure recipe on my BMB early on that included wheat bran, applesauce, and prune juice.

The prune juice was making it distasteful enough that I just switched to wheat bran in applesauce. That seemed to help me with any constipation… but I don't know if that's your issue or if it's more upset stomach?

Frequent, small meals helped my nausea, although it didn't totally eradicate it. Fortunately, mine didn't last past the first tri.

Hope you find something to make you feel better soon!

  • My nurse suggested Metamucil to get some extra fiber, especially if you're not eating much fruit right now. Also, drink more water.

Child's pose in yoga sometimes helps me with bloating as well, and I have read the wide-stance version is ok during pregnancy.

  • You could try avoiding gluten. Even if you're not gluten intolerant it can be harder to process, especially if you're over 30. There are lots of gluten free alternative foods out there now.
  • Ooooh I am SO feeling your pain. The bloating is ridiculous, the constipation, tummy aches and gurgling are just insane. I'm having general food aversions and I've gone off coffee now so it must be serious lol. I do have an ulcer/ stomach issue that's clearly making life harder now so I'm going to speak to the doctor this week as it's going to get worse. I've been eating cheese too, it's been a lifesaver. Thankfully the nausea has gone.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. Honestly, I was only occasionally constipated and more often having terrible gas combined with loose stools. But, paying more attention to my water and fiber still seems to have helped. I appreciate it!
  • Dried apricots are helping me right now
