Last minute lupron trigger decision

My RE called and told me that my choices at this point are Lupron trigger or cancelled cycle because I will get OHSS if I used any hCG.  And if I cancel this cycle, chances are any other cycles would just put me in the same position.  I know people take Lupron all the time, but I have some medical history that makes me very nervous about some of the long term side effects I have read about.  She is not concerned...but it just makes me so nervous.  So now I have till tonight to decide....Lupron trigger or end of the road....

Re: Last minute lupron trigger decision

  • I am not sure about the long term effects of lupron, but I would probably do the lupron trigger.

I'm OOP though and we can't afford too many more cycles of IVF.  I also am a fairly poor responder, so I've never had to worry about OHSS.

It's interesting though, I don't think my clinic uses lupron triggers to prevent OHSS, because they don't think that the HCG trigger increases the odds of OHSS that much.

  • I'm so sorry. *hugs* Do you think a single dose of Lupron would contribute substantively to the long term risks?

  • @pblge I am sure a single dose (and a small dose at that) would probably not be a big deal...I am honestly just scared of it.  I know it seems irrational.  I have actually been pretty calm and comfortable with most of this journey....this is my one thing....irrational fear of Lupron.

  • I took the lupron trigger-- no side effects.  Just like any medicine or surgery- there are possible side effects.  Weigh the pros and cons and make what decision is right for you and your body.  Good luck!

    IVF #1 Oct 2013- cancelled
IVF #2 Mar 2014- success.... baby girl born 11/28/14
FET #1 Mar 2016- baby boy due 12/16/16

  • I did a lupron trigger this last cycle. And also on the day of ER I did .15 iu of hcg. My clinic was prepared to help keep OHSS at bay and I couldn't have been happier. The first 2 ivfs when I hyperstimmed and had to coast and my e2 skyrocketed did make me think that the e2 played a factor in not so great embryos. I was also put on cabergoline too as a precaution n got a very mild case of OHSS. With me ohss cant be 100% prevented because my ovaries produce a lot of eggs.

Best of luck with your decision, I really hope u go thru with it because one of the worst feelings of dealing with IF is all the "what ifs" that run thru our heads *hugs*

    ALL WELCOME :)

When they told me my IVF might be cancelled right before ER (long story), I was devastated. It felt like all my work/effort for about two months was for nothing. I had given up coffee and alcohol, done weekly acupuncture, lots of at-home moxa, god only knows how many shots and blood draws, weeks of BCP that turned me into a b!tch, super healthy eating, and then there's all those dildocam scans!!!!  All for nothing!

My point is that it's a lot of hard work (and money for some) to throw away due to a small percentage risk. I was lucky that mine was not cancelled in the end, but I probably would have done just about anything to salvage it at that point.

Not sure that's helpful. But as you say the one dose of Lurpon is probably not a serious threat to your health (maybe? not sure...), so I would personally definitely go for it if this is your only option.

    *hugs*

  • I don't know your history with lupron- but I can't imagine ending everything at this point. Do the lupron! I do a lupron shot every day.. Haven't had any side effects other than headache.

  • I also don't know your medical history, obviously, but I also did a Lupron trigger. I was nervous about it, as I, too, was hoping to avoid Lupron. However, I promise you, the trigger is a ridiculously low dose and I doubt that 1 dose will have any long term effects. Again, the trigger is an extremely low dose, I even called the on-call doctor to make sure I had the dosage right!
Me (31) - PCOS with insulin resistance

4 rounds of Clomid = no response
    IVF # 1 - ET (1 3AA, 4 frosties): 12/22 = BFP
    EDD: 9/9/2014

  • Thank you all.  We have decided to go ahead with it....but I am soooo nervous.  930 tonight!

@IFinTN we did discuss doing a half dose hCG but she said that I shouldn't be getting any hCG at all.  And we are already planning for a freeze all.  I am not sure about my total follicle count but there are a lot and my E2 is more than double what it was last time and I had moderate OHSS then.  Guess I am just really sensitive to it all....I think that just adds to my worries about the Lupron.
