Daycare questions?

Our boy/girl twins were born 2 weeks ago at 30w6d. We will be taking them to an in-home daycare a couple months after they come home and we are starting to do interviewing. What questions did you ask? I think caring for a preemie is a different ball game. I thought I'd ask if they were CPR certified, how many kids they watch, previous experience ...

Yuck. Daycare is a source of great stress at the moment for us. We had intended to send them to a daycare center we had lined up, but the doctors told us that wasn't safe with all of the sicknesses and young kids present until at least flu and RSV season was over. So now we are scrambling to find someone to come to our home when I go back to work.

First, I guess I'd double check with doctors and nurses about if an in home daycare is ok. Our smallest twin had chronic lung disease and went home on oxygen, so we didn't have medical clearance for that. Assuming it is ok, I'd ask about steps to limit sickness at the daycare, notification procedures if there is something contagious going around, medical training for any medications that need to be administered or oxygen that has to be monitored.

Ditto PP - daycare was our original plan at least part if the week, but our doctors nixed that one quickly. We ended up hiring a nanny (a special care nursery nurse!) for two days a week, and my parents cover the remainder of the week. Definitely talk with your doctors about this one, first! GL!

LO was born at 29.6 and has chronic lung disease and was on o2 at home til this weekend. Dr never said no day care but we covered our bases as best we could. We managed to keep her out of daycare until last week (4mos actual, 2.5 adj), but she did go with the o2. Our provider (in home) was comfortable with it and we showed her the ropes for the tank. She (without us asking) asked all the parents/kids to get flu shot/mist because there was a preemie coming and also had been talking with the kids about not touching "baby Elliott". She keeps her up off floor level when the other kids are playing on the floor. Clearly nothing is fool proof, but it seems to be making the best of our situation.

I would just discuss precautions of preemies, emphasize hand washing, minimize touching of baby, etc. Also CPR/first aid cert was a must for us.

Good luck, it is really stressful, but we love our sitter and if I can't be home to be with her, she's in a good place!

We were told no daycare until RSV season was over.  Thankfully my mom and MIL are able to come watch her.  We've pretty much become hermits.

Hopefully by the time they need to be in daycare, RSV season will be over.
