Breastfeeding

When does frequency decrease?

Is there a point when the frequency of feeds decreases? When I can feed less than 8-12 times per day and feel that they are getting the proper amount?

Re: When does frequency decrease?

  • You should always be feeding in demand. Eventually they will start eating more at each sitting so they are able to go longer in between. It will totally vary per baby though. At 5m we are down to about 7 times a day

  • I agree with pp that it really depends on your baby. My DS is 9 months and nurses 5-6 times a day and 1-2 times at night.

  • 10 months here, feeding on demand and it is still every 2hrs, day and night.  It's just how my kid is.  I doubt it will change before she weans!

  • Feed on demand, which will naturally decrease as baby gets a larger tummy and more efficient. We were down to 6 feedings a day by 3.5 months and are still there now at nearly 7 months. Every baby is different so you really just sort of have to wait and see. But I can assure you the demand on your time will go down. Eventually they get so efficient you wonder if they got enough and you might miss the long nursing sessions, believe it or not! ;)

  • To echo PPs, continue feeding on demand. Usually one or two feeds will naturally drop once you introduce solids between 6 and 12 months. The more solid meals, the less BF meals.
