Waking up

How old are your LOs? How do they wake up in the morning?

We usually have to wake E during the week for school. But when we are home, whether it's morning or after a nap, she wakes up crying. Is this still normal at 17 months? When will she stop waking up crying?

Re: Waking up

  • N and M are 19 months. N woke up crying until about a month ago. Now he wakes up talking (mom? Mom? Retire? Owl? Mom?). Molly wakes up and just plays happily in her crib for God knows how long, and that's usually how I find her when I go to see if she is still sleeping!

I'd love for E to wake up talking or playing. Every time I go get her I tell her she doesn't have to cry. She can just call for mama and I'll come get her. It hasn't worked yet though.

  • On weekdays DH has to wake DS up to go to his moms house. DS is usually a big grouch and cries.
But DS stopped waking up (on his own) crying around 14 months. At that time he was humming/babbling.
Now at 2.5 years and still in a crib he wakes up screaming for "mama mama open the door". I prefer the humming and babbling! But soon enough he'll be in a big boy bed... Then we're really in for some trouble.

  • DS1 is nearly always happy upon waking. He's just super laid back about life (except for the temper tantrums related to taking things away or closing he refrigerator...yikes!). He would babble for an hour if we let him. DS2 only started waking without screaming (he usually makes this weird nasal moaning noise or babbles) about 2 months ago. But, I have to believe sleeping with someone else in the room impacts how they wake.

    They are 15 months.

  • DS (17 months) normally wakes up happy, babbling in his bed.  He can sit like that for a good 20-30 minutes.  I think that little bit of time is his way of waking up because if we go in there too early, he gets crabby and buries his face in the mattress!

Anyway, when he does wake up crying, he's either not feeling well or he's not done sleeping.  His I'm-not-done-sleeping cry is more of a whining cry.  For example, his nap today - he woke up about one hour into it, sat up and started whining/crying (and DH and I both looked at each other and said "hell no!").  We gave him a few minutes and he slept for another 2 hours.  We get that kind of crying the few times we have to wake him up in the am.

  • M is 14 months.

In the morning, he usually makes some yawning sound, then whines.  As soon as he hears us get up (our room is right above his, so he can hear us walking around), he will whine LOUDLY.  If we don't get to him fast enough, he'll start crying.

After his first nap, he wakes up happy.  Not laughing or giggling per se, but not whining or crying either.

After his second nap, he has been crying for the past few months.  He used to wake up happy after his second nap, so I don't know what has changed.  My assumption is that when he goes down for his 2nd nap, it is still light in his room. But when he wakes up, it is pitch dark, and that disorients him or scares him?  I mean, the crying sort of coincided with daylight savings.  We'll see if the crying stops when we move the clock forward in March.

J is always in bed with us by morning. She is smiley, chirpy, and bouncy. From nap she sits up and shakes her head (to clear the cobwebs?) and starts looking for me. If she cries, I snuggle and nurse her, then put her down to finish her nap. If she is chirpy, she gets up. She only ever cries in the am if she has a poop, then only sometimes.

Edit: she cries MOTN when she wakes and wants to nurse. Sigh.

  • Both of my big kids are a hot mess if you wake them up whether it be in the AM or after nap and have always been that way (almost 3 and 19mo).  Otherwise neither of them really ever wake up on their own crying.  Both of them went through this phase where they would cry in the middle of the night but they would be asleep while doing it so I always just assumed they were night terrors or something and left them alone because they would both stop crying within a few minutes.

I don't think if I would be worried about it all if I were you though.

  • DS is only 14 months, so I don't know the solution for a LO of 17 months, but DS does go through phases where he wakes crying in the morning. But typically, he wakes up grunting and babbling. However, for his second nap (afternoon) he wakes up bawling. I think it's hard for him to adjust to being awake after that nap, for some reason.

Hope it doesn't last for too much longer for y'all.

DS1 still wakes up crying sometimes, but usually just yells (Mommy?!?! Daddy?!?! Julie?!?! Anyone who might come and rescue him). On a side note, yes, he is still in a crib, and yes I will keep him there until he is 40 years old if he will let me. The last thing I need is a not quite 3 year old running around the house unattended. For the longest time, he would wake up really happy and would talk and play in his crib for up to a half an hour before he even so much as whined. I think all kids are different and some go through phases of waking happily and waking mad at the world.
