Eliminating dairy from my diet

My LO is 7 weeks and was diagnosed with severe reflux. One of the doctors I went to suggested that I should eliminate dairy from my diet. I am lactose intolerant and so is most of my fathers side of the family. Did eliminating dairy products from your diet help any of you? When did u decided to change your diet? What synthoms did your babies have for you to think about an allergy/ intolarance ? I know it can take up to 2-3 weeks to see improvement. He is also on meds for his reflux. Sorry for all the questions, but milk and dairy products are a main part of my diet.

Re: Eliminating dairy from my diet

  • Dairy products were a main part of my diet when DS developed a sensitivity to milk and soy protein. I quit dairy cold turkey after the first fully green, mucousy poo. It sucked having to give up my favorite and staple foods (because yes, even hidden dairy has to go), but it really, really helped with both his painful, gassy poops and his reflux. I slowly started adding dairy back in around 7 or 8 months, and he's been fine since. So, there is hope he'll outgrow it sooner than later.

  • Our symptoms were green mucousy poop with occasional flecks of blood and gassiness. It took about a week for his gasiness to get better, but it took a full 5 weeks for his poop to get back to normal.

I really like www.godairyfree.org for help avoiding dairy and www.mspimama.com for recipes and substitution ideas.

    Good luck mama!!

Sorry, I'm a little confused.  If you are lactose intolerant how is dairy a main part of your diet?  Doesn't it make you sick?

I am lactose intolerant to a degree (I can't drink milk or eat ice cream without issue) but things like cheese and baked/cooked in dairy products don't bother me. So it's possible to not be able to drink milk, but still have dairy as a main part of your diet.

DD had a pretty rough life before eliminated dairy and soy from my diet.  It was a very hard transition at first, making mistakes left and right... but once I got the hang of it, it was no issue.  DD reacted to these foods in my milk because she was pretty severely allergic to them.  But on the plus side, I noticed improvement basically right away, within a couple days.  By 1 week free, I had a totally new baby.

Her symptoms were super fussy, screamed for hours until finally relieved by pooping... which was generally diarrhea which often came out green, sometimes frothing out (which confused us thinking it was a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance).  She would get a rash on her cheeks... basically from her ears and below.  She had eczema, which our doctor kept saying was just from the cold weather.  She would poop once for every time she nursed, and would always pull off and begin screaming from anywhere to an hour to two hours until she pooped.  It was miserable.  By then, it was basically time to nurse again and start the whole thing over.

Things don't have to be as severe or obvious as our situation was though.  It would be worth trying to see if there is improvement for your LO.  Dairy isn't too bad to cut.  There are a lot of great alternatives (almond milk, coconut milk, etc.)

ETA: Oh yes... mucousy stool and finally blood specs because it took so long to figure out.  Sigh.

I use lactaid and it works really well for me ...
  • Thank you all for your replies, and I am glad to know that my LO can outgrow it !
  • I use vegan cheese when I really want something, like pizza. It's expensive, so I don't use it too often.

  • My DS had a rash on his face and shoulders, was irritable / painful gas. And had green mucousy stools.

I tried eliminating dairy and then had a soy latte. The soy had even a more severe reaction. So I eliminated both and his rash went away pretty quickly!!

He's 6 months old so I've started to try and reintroduce things. He seems find with "hidden dairy/soy" in backed good and super small quantities. But if I eat cheese he will still break out.

It's pretty crazy, within 24 hours of a clean diet his face becomes clear again! Definitely a direct correlation!
